The interior press ot the State is already meeting the Chronicle more than half-way in—its efforts to arouse the people of this section to concerted action in the ‘matter of placing its resources, industries and advantages before the public in the proper light, and we hope they will keep everlastingly at it. The people ought to show their appreciation of the Chronicle’s efforts in’ behalf of the prosperity of this section by liberal patronage and by mailing weekly each number of the “boom” issue to their Eastern friends. eo STP) Fe Control the Tonque. SECRET known totwo persons is not asecret. When a man wishes to hold information from the general knowledge let him lock his lips and keep a tight rein on his tongue. No matter how many confidences he may receive, let him give none, fer the confident, as a class, is a betrayer. There are few people who will keep another man’s secret. One who receives a secret has another intimate friend to. whom he confides it, and that friend has another, and so the story travels from mouth to mouth, losing nothing en route, until suddenly everybody knows it and it is common talk. One tattler can spread a piece of news over a very wide territory. ‘Those who have had the experience know how exasperating it is to be questioned by some one, almiost a stranger, about matters which they fondly deemed to be butied in the deepest dungeons of secrecy. There are talkers—nota-. bly, some women—who can give a tale wider and quicker circulation than any newspaper could give it. As soon as they hear a startling item of information these inveterate and active gossips clap on their. hats and run out to whisper it to all their calling list. In half an hour they can tear the prefoundest secret to tatters and scatter its fragments to the winds, But women are not the enly tattlers, though they publish more secrets. than men do, for they have more time to give to the joyful task. Men are just as unreliable confidents as women are. Trust neither man nor woman—nor the green grass—with your secrets, else you will wear asses’ ears as Midas did. Human beings seem to have an itch for telling what they know. The man who is truly secretive, who can curb the propensity to tattle; is -net-only wise, but-is-also the possessor of a valuable asset. Men have lost fortunes by not being able to hold their tongues. Employers complain that they cannot find men who may be trusted with secrets. A habit of silence can be hired out fora salary. It is an excellent habit, but rare. Foolish vanity prompts most people to tell all they know. They relish the surprise of their hearers and delight to make dramatic effects in conversation. . Tattling, especially when spiced with exaggeration, is a form of boasting. Even when one can see no harm in publishing certain information, it is prudent to suppress it, unless by talking one will serve some good purpose. The man who knows all that another man knows, and something beside, has an advantage, a second barrel in reserve, as it were, which may be useful on’ some occasion. _ Noman should let others know how prosperous he is, or what prosperity he éxpects, for prosperity excites envy, the meanest and most malignant of passions. If one is-becoming rich, let him not be ostentatious, or the whole world will seem to conspire against him. If one is getting a large salary, let him pretend poverty, or envy will assail him with grumblings lies, detractions and splenetic criticism. It is marvelous = t putts people will take to injure a man who is thriving, but : in no wise injures these voluuteer enemies, }with their interests. ‘Therefore be silent. ° SO et acer ete eS E's. -) out his report to the City Trusteee as pany I of Grass Valley belong te the Second Regiment and with Company F of Woodland form the Third Batallion, of which Mejor P.
