The eyes of the 30 states of the Union are upon you and it is for
you the 3lst to avenge this insult to the Anglo-Saxon race, and.
to show the savage that the American Nation who can dictate terms
of peace and yar to every other nation in the world is not to be
trifled with.
In the fall, 1860, Sheriff Rogers of El Dorado County wrote Governor Burnett
of California that Indians (probably foothill Nisenan) in his area had sent off their
women and children and had assembled in considerable numbers to kill and rob immigrants 97
Sheriff Rogers was directed to call out two hundred volunteers to punish these Indians) 8poger's company unsuccessfully searched for them in southern El Dorado County,
returned to Mud Springs and disbanded. Therefore, the first Indian war expedition
of El Dorado County (E1 Dorado I) ended abruptly with considerably different results
than intended. The official report does not list one Indian killed 19 Immigrant
reaction to El Dorado I reflected a mixed attitude on California Indian policy. .
Their (Roger's company) exploits were far from brilliant and were
mostly restricted to destroying abandoned rancherias with their
food stores of berries..a measure which only drove the Indians
to other desperate means of starvation.110
..although the troops were unable to accomplish any brilliant
achievements, owning to the features of the country and the
character of the foe, still they performed some hard service,
and their efforts have secured peace in the vicinity and protected
the wearied emigrants .111
..the objects of El Dorado I was claimed to be the suppression
of Indian insurrection. The truth is that there had not been any
outbreak or any probability of one.112
-..some Indians had been killed in the neighborhood of Johnson's
ranch..no provocation of the Indians had given cause to such
occurrence, but that it had been done with a view to stir up the
Indians to commit some outrage or depredation in retaliation, and
then have the strongest measures taken against them..the scheme
worked..the Indians revenging themselves, killed several miners, {.
