SUG *R: AND THE TARIFF.
The: gentlemen who were uproariously insisting that the enactment of
the Dingley law was the true cause of
the advance in the price of sugar-trust
stock are saying nothing about the fact.
thatithe stock bas fallen from 160 to
120 with that same Dingley law still in.
force. Tt is easy to make assertions,
bat,the fellow who makes them on a
falee basis.is likely to get tripped up
in the long ran. If the advance in the
sugat-trast stock coincident with the
enactment of the Dingley law was due
to permanent advantages which the
trust, was: given’ under. that. law, why
has its’ stock fallen within seven
moiithé of the enactment of: tbat law
to a figure lower than that at which it
sold before the law was enacted? The
fact is, the advance in sugar-trust
stock, which occurred as soon as it was
known that the act'would place no internal-revenue tax upon the sugar, alre.dy in the bonded warehouses in this
country, was due solely to the know1 dge: that «the trust had enormous
quantities of sugar on hand upon
which “it would” realize extra profits equal to the increase of duties made
by the Dingley law.. While this specjal advantage was only temporary and
likely to simply continue until the
etock of sugar in hand was absorbed, it
was jegt: to. indicate. extra divi-. :
danfs‘and a consequent:advance. Now
that the large stock of sugar which the
¢t-ust had then in hand has been absorbed and the profits made upon it,
the stock goes back to a figure lower
than that at which it sold prior to the
enactment .of the Dingley law, thus
showing that. the claim that that law
would operate to its permanent advanee —THE COURSE OF WISDOM.
it McKinley’s conservative
i attitude in regard to the
situation, and the.care which
sinistration is exercising to prevy -nt unwise and dangerous action, con¢ nue to receive the highest approbation
from citizens and representative journals of all parties. There isan evident
feeling among all classes of good: citizens that the recent event ought to be
thoroughly . investigated and understood before action is taken, and an
eyual evidence of entire confidence in
the ad t's wisdom and willingness
ae 6 ‘proper action, whatever
vat may be, when the facts are known.
Until they are known, public sentiment demands no action other than
that of the character which has already been had.

Fishing For Frogs.
To fish for frogs'a may needs a broad,
flat bottomed, steady punt, a cane pole,
with 25 feet of good line, three -heoks
tied in a bunch and. a companion, .To
the three hooks is tied. a small piece of
bright red flannel. The cast is made, and
the lure is drawn slowly along the water. The frog rises ‘within a yard of it,
looks at it and says ‘‘Aha!’’ He approaches within six inches and: says
*““Oho!’’ Then he says ‘‘A-a-ab!’’ and
grabs it. The next instant he swings in
air, hooked .through the throat.. He is
lifted into the boat, grasped. between.the
left thumb and forefinger, and the point
of the small blade of a knife is
down just between his eyes. Sometimes .
he sheds tears. His struggles are stilled
in an instant. His hind legs are:quiekly
severed from his-body and tossed into a
bucket filled. with ice water. . The rer
mainder of him is thrown overboard,
where it floats ghastly white, bobbing
