rot Ore ng a )= ity Dail ~ a nscript. — :. VOL, LXVI--NO. 10278, fe NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, MONDAY EVENING, MARCH 19, 1894. Established Sept. 6, 1860, by N. P. Brown & Co, semaines oe THE DAILY-TRANSCRIPT Published Every Evening, except Sunday. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. SERVED BY CARRIERS AT 15 Cts. per Week or 60 Cts. per Month WHEN PAID IN ADVANCE : SIX DOLLARS PER YEAR. Examiner -and~Chronicle ~~ : And Send Them to the Daily Transcript Office. Our Bulletin Board. We have had a bulletin board erected in front of our office, and upon that ‘board, at _*about-3:30 every afternoon, we will have chalked the coupon vote of Nevada and El Dorado counties as appears in the Chronicle in the morning. No other county has any. shew whatever of winning that cup, and that is why we speak of these two. It is evident that we have got to do some hard work to bring that cup to this county, but we can get it if we are in. dead, eatnest on the ‘proposition. We say to our friends everywhere, cut out all the coupons in the Chronicle and Examiner and send them to the Transcript and we will see that each ‘one of them counts a vote for our Midwinter Fair mineral exhibit. oes Bes. rites a Our people, that is ite say those who have great county pride, were disgusted on seeing in the Chronicie last evening that El Dorado was ~ of Nevada county about 2,000 votes in the cup contest. We had no little amount of that disgust. We are informed that a drummer who was here the —__-other -day-ssid-that-he—knew-of a—business man at Placerville: who had nearly 5,000 -votes on hand which he intended to send . ‘below in a.few days. It looks as though he had sent them. : oe eee A Nuisance. A. large number.ofpersons--whe-have teanis are in ihe habit of stopping at exactly the places where they bappen to have business te transact, and in mcst cases it also happens the teams are. placed on the cross-walks, to the disgust of people who are compelled to go out into the mud in order to cross from one side to thé. other. The nuisance should be stopped. Venereastes Parlor. The Nevada City , Undertaking Company have fitted up an elegant parlor at their establishment on Broad street and have fitted . up the ‘place in fine style generally. It is now a suitable place from which to have# funeral take place. ae It is the talk of the town that the ball to be’ given by the Carly’ Bears on the 6th of April will’ bé oné ‘of ‘the “grandest social events that has ever taken place here. Carly Bears from all parts of the State ya be in attendance. That Telephone I Line. Auburn Republican: _ The Sunset Telephone Company, which bas recently’ put up & line between Nevaila City ‘and'Grass Valley, has as yet done nothing toward extending the line to Auburn, as was prom. ised, further than to have the poles sawed. If apologies and promises would make ‘the connection, the work should Have been obmpleted ere this, but the people of Gtass Valley and Nevada City are of the opinion that the more satisfactory proposition weuld be for the merchants $0 take the business in hand themselves and make the connections needed. In the meantime, the ‘telephone company will probably continue to ‘aw wood,” om. Wending That Way. A rich silver discovery has been made) in Hell Canyon, N. Produced by a Good Company. At the Nevada Theatre this evening the Hosmer-Ross Dramatic Company will’ produce an entirely new play to Nevada City people. A pretty domestic story of life in Missouri. Each character in the drama is & portrait of homely life in a country town. The thread of.the play is woven with quaint humor and natural originality almost new to the stage, which has been une of the main == . reasons of its great success. The see . in Lied 4 Use brief is as follows: Cut Out the Coupons An express robbery has. been committed IN THE on the Wabash line and the express agent has been arrested “as an accomplice. The robber, a_gentleman by birth and _educa_. tion, is in biding in a village near by and falls in love with the daughter of the village blacksmith, Kate Sterling. She has been eduvated in a semimary and is attracted to this man because he moves in a, world she longs to know. Josh Stebbins, the county sheriff, has known and loved her from her childhood and when he finds that she is infatuated with. this supposed ‘gentleman, ‘‘Danvers,” whose identity he has discovered, he resolves to resign his office in order that he may not be compelled to arrest the man who he feels: is loved by thewoman for whom he would sacrifice his life. His heroic efforts to save a scoundrel against his better judgment and the interesting scenes. that, follow must be seen to be appreciated. The character of the County Sheriff 1sportrayed by-Mr.-Hosmer and_he is credited with giving a most excellent performance of a part most admirably suited to his style of acting, Miss Hattie Ross plays the heroine, Kate in a finished and artistic manner, and lends to that character apathetic charm that has won for her the deserved praise of the préss and public in every city she has appeared. ‘ Among the striking scenes of the play is the Country Blacksmith Shop in full operation, and an exciting escape on horseback, _Mr. Hosmer is a native of Nevada, and the many friends of these talented young pecple are anxious to see a rousing house welcome their appearance. —— BRITISH COLUMBIA MINES, Extensive Hydraulic Operations ‘on Quesnelle River. John B. Hobson, formerly well known in county, is manager of gold mines in British Columbia that are owned by the Canadian: Pacific railroad men. ; The mines are some sixty miles east of Fraser river, the northerly one being located near Quesnelle Forks, on the Quesnelle river, and the other on Herse Fly creek. A number of Chinese have been working the gravel for several years past in the primitive fashion of the forty-niners, says the Bulletin, and have taken out large quantities of gold. It remained.for the present . owners of the mines to discover their great value. * Mr,-Hebson says that from the ‘drifting done: by--some.ten or twelve men under his direction last summer he is pre~ pared to believe that the mines will exceed anything of the kind California ever saw.
