A New Chief ‘Justice.
The Supreme Court Amendments
having been defeated. it de volves ‘upo
Governor Bartlett to appoftit-a new:
Chief Justice in place of Judge Morrison, deceased. The constitution
provides “if a vacancy cecur in the
office of a Justice, the Governor shall
appoint a person to hold the office until
the election and qualification of a Justice tgfill the vacancy, which election
shall take-place at® the next succeeding general election, and the Justice,
so elected shall hold the office for_the
remainder of the unexpired term.”
Under the above -reading-of the law
the appointee of the Governor can on*4¥ hold the office until the general
election of 1888. We do not believe
the Governor could give such universal satisfaction as that of Judge Niles .

Nev. Several teams are now busily .
at work plowing on it.
Hayford and Lobner some weeks
ago sold 582 acres of land comprising
nearly all of Section 13 to San Francisco parties. The land is near Cape
Horn, and the price $4000, is probably
ten-times what it it would have commanded six or eight yéars ago.’ We
believe it will be planted to pears,
Under Sheriff Hayford has’a_ nice
quarter section of fine arable land just .
above Cape Horn which he intends to .
plant in fruit as soon as possible.

Joseph Howard's “Life of Beecher.”
Joseph Howard, Jr., the widely
know journalist and intimate friend of
Henry Ward Beecher for the past fifty
years, is engaged upon a life ‘of the
great Preacher and Orator, which will
no doubt be the standard work, as
Mr. Howard’s intimate relations with
Mr, Beecher, and his justly won popularity as a writer, are an assurance of
@ work of peculiar interest and value.
We learn the work is to be brought out
by Hubbard Bros., at an early day,
and will no doubt be sold by subscription.
