a= es (oes en Cats OF ty t : ba Nevapa CIty DaILy TRANSCRIPT NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor. FRED E. BROWN, Manager. SUBSORIPTION $6 Por Year . By Carrier, * = oh eee a ae 12 1-26 Per Week Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City} TUESDAY oes ieedey seins, eoeels veveeeg rere a cececeeccvececscs MABPIAGE AS A DISABILITY \HE New York Court of Appeals has handed down a decision in favor of a Brooklyn teacher: who had a suit against the superintendent of schools for refusing to permit her to remain in school after marrying, a rule of the board of education forbidding the women teachers of Brooklyn to marry. F Sat: tee The court held that the charter of Greater New York provides for a trial on charges before dismissal and specific— ally states the causes for which a teacher can be discharged. The causes specified are inefficiency, insubordination and immorality, and the court holds that marriage not being included among these charges, the board cannot make a rule contrary to the charter of the city. : Such a rule as that of the Brooklyn Board of Education should have been set aside on the further ground that it is contrary to commonsense, The-ruling out of married women from the teaching forces in the public schools in some places has been for the sole purpose of creating places for some one else. The assertion is frequently made that married women do not need such positions as they have husbands to support them. This indicates the purely economic phase -of the question, but it is not the broadest point of view. The first consideration should be qualification of the teacher for the work and the welfare of the pupil. Certainly the woman of mature years, who is perhaps a mother, is not disqualified for dealing with children, She is apt to be tar better fitted for her work than some unexperienced slip of a girl who takes a. position merely as a financial make-shift with the knowledge that she will be disqualified if she should: follow the very natural inclination to marry should opportunity offer. Such a condition as that in Brooklyn would naturally interfere most seriously with bright and intelligent women taking to teaching as a career. MARCH 22, 1904 4voeaev,enne yp @ PHILOSOPHY OF ADVERVISING 4 HE species of business man who asserts that he advertises in his home newspapers “just to help them along,” has grown so rapidly less in the past few years that he is now almost extinct. Still, there are a few of him left and no doubt he will view with astonished incredulity the following points on advertising presented by the Columbus, O., Citizen; “Tt is a fact,” says this journal, ‘‘that the great bulk of paid newspaper advertising costs the advertiser nothing. The following business wae transacted in the Superior Oourt today Judge F. T. Nilon presiding: “ Robert Van Hoeter vs. W. H. Smith etal. Argued and submitted, In the case of B. Murphy ve. M. Griffin was a passenger on the train, having boarded it at Imperial, bound for Los Angoles. California Polytechnic School San Lovurs Oprsro, March 22 —News has*just been received that the United ‘ tates government has set aside 60,000 acres of land along the summit of the San Lucia mountain range in San Louis Obispo county for a forestry reserve. This marks the beginning of a work which augurs well for the fatare development of the county. It is also of great importance to the Polytechnic School as it guarantees prectical demonstration in forestry to the siudents, There is no doubt but that the Bureau of Forestry will co-cperate heartily with the school in all kinds of. forestry work on this reserve. Students in agricultare will likely camp for a week or tio each year in the mountains doing forestry work. — on Millinery Grand Opening. Mrs. L. A SHER THIER. é. He Steals a Hundred Thousand Dollars. RIVERSIDE, March 22.—A warrant charging the embezzlement of one hundred thousand dollars from the Orange Growers National Bank has been issued for the arrest of H. committing ali sorts of horrible atrocimessages from the ringside as received That is to say, it indirectly returns to him not only the amount invested, but a profit in which the whole community. shares. “The bulk of newspaper advertising is placed by merchants. The money it costs is paid almost wholly in salaries and incidentals to individuals in the community in which the advertiser resides, so that his return is not wholly from the general trade he seeks, but also the injection of this amount of money into the trade of his community, with the result of enlarging it, perpetuating it and multiplying its resources in all forms of industry. The merchant feels the pulse of prosperous or adverse conditions more delicately than almost any other member of the community. News -papers pay by far the larger portion of expenses in building up thecommunity. Their investment is not nearly as great in machinery, stock and other forms of tangible. property, as in brains and brawn. That is the reason why money spen+ with them by local merchants brings two-fold returns in the present and the future. “The newspaper as an institution working for the welfare of the community in both material and other respects, in reality makes paid advertising free. The intelligent advertising patron of such a 1 ewspaper contributes to the happiness and prosperity of the community at the same time he promotes his own business interests in the present and lays the foundation for greater profits and usefulness in the future.” Officers Elected.
