PS Te Daily ae -PUBLISBED. aT Nevada City, Nevada County, nde 5 x _ and other fruits. ee tae WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 1836. WHY THEY Ex Go THERE. Dr. Geo. L. Simmons, of Sacra~ mente, has purchased a tract of land about a mile from Colfax, on which he proposes to plant olives Several other ‘persons from the lower country, and two or three more who lately arrived. from the East, havebought land in that same section, and are going to engage in the same business, and it is only a matter of a very short time when all the land in artd-around Colfax and the adjoining places will be under cul-. tivation. The largest owners of lands, between Colfax and the Junction, reside in Sacramento. The question naturally arises; why is there sucha demand for land in. “that particular locality: This question has often been asked, and there is but.one answer, and if is this: The live men of Colfax have, for the past two years, carefully gathered some of the best fruits that they have raised and exhibited them at the State Fair, where they have been seen by thousands of people, and the agents who had charge of the displays of fruits took particular pains in giving truthful accounts of the soil they were raised on, and kept the namef Colfax prominently before’ the people. It proved the first best “step for advertising itslands. By the judicious expenditure of a few hundred dollars in showing their products at the State Fair, they are mow reaping their reward, Land there, as has been demonstrated, is equal to any in the southern counties, and can be had at 80 per cent. less than that for which land sharks in the over-puffed part of the State chargg. Nevada county: has "thousands of acres of the same kind, and just such land as hundreds of. immigrants coming to this coast desire ; but no steps have been taken to . call their attention to.the fact. Colfax got its first boom by exhibiting its fruits at the State and Mechani¢s Institute Fairs, which was one of the very best ways of advertising. The Transcript suggested that Nevada county follow thegplendid example set by the le town of Colfax, and asked fot’an appropriation of $400 from the Supervisors, as was: the case in Placer, and the Tidings jumps in with a protest that it should not te done by Nevada county until the elephantine toll roads are bought up by the county. Until ~««then, quoth the Tidings, we must ‘the prosperity of the county is ennot advertise our lands by publishing to the world, through the County and State Fairs, what they can produce, as ‘‘we don’t want the county, to give any of her money for di Maying any citizen jor any of her products at Jany Fair.”’ The Tidings warits the merchant to advertise in its columns, for that would put money into its purse, . but is opposed to the county appropriating money to advertise its resources, which would be the means of adding thowsands of dollats to its taxable property, in ‘which the whole people would be benefited. We are entered for this fight, and if the Supervisors‘are as stupid as the Tidings, and refuse to make any appropriation for that purpose, we shall hammer away at the matter until the money is raised by. private subscription by the éitizens of Nevada -City. We are determined that there suai be a handsome display of our products ‘atthe next State Fair, and while our people will probably be compelled to do it alone, the whole county. will receive the créedit and . benefit to be derived therefrom. There is another thing we are determinedto do, and that is,ham--mer away until something is done in the way of forming an Immigration Society, that will take steps to bring our lands to the attention _ ,o£ people abroad. And as we sta‘ted before; the best way to bring ‘gbout the desired result is by liberally advertising its products. As it is well known that the best and largest part of-the farming lands in Nevada county lie below and contiguous to Grass Valley, . which place will receive the greatest benefit from the development of its lands, itis incomprehensible why the Tidings editor assumes ~ the’position he does. The proverb that “‘there'are none so blind as ~ they who will not see,” just fits the case of Shoemaker. , . possesses. as ever. perepolis, Arizona. When jhanced, and the numberless acres of Jand that now liewaste and neglected, shall ‘‘bloom and blos-. . . som as the rose, ” and we begin to feel the effects of a land boom, the business along, just at the time its services can be dispensed with, and thenit will have the effrontery to tell of the influence the Tidings Feeder I was troubled with Catarrh. I used half a bottle of Ely’s Cream Balm and it helped me wonder“ . fully. My father was almost deaf, he had a.constant roaring in his ears, after a few applications of the Balm he was relieved of the roaring and can now hear as well Miss Nettie Wirtle, Copfy ie Senator Hearst Meets an od \ Mining Chur at Washington. Senator Hearat metan old friend unexpectedly at Washington. He was invited by a brother Senator to visit the office of the Secretary of the Senate, where weary lawmakers sometimes lounge. As he entered the room his associate introduced him to Anson McCook, who has served three terms in the House of Representatives from New York, and now is the Secretary of the Senate. . Hearst looked at the handsome. Secretary a moment and said : % Ain't this the “McCook that I used to mine. with in, Nevada county thirty years ago?” “Are you‘old George Hearst?’ asked McCook, as he grasped the new Senator’s hand cordially: ‘I wentto the Senate chamber,’”’ he continued, ‘‘when you were sworn in, tp Restbbetin you were the man I used to work “well, here we.meet. again after thirty year’s) separation,’’ said Hearst. ‘‘We uséd to work side by side in the mines when neither of us had a-dollar, and wher we didn’t know wherd the next week’s rations would come from.’’ The two old miners were at. once on the old footing of intimacy. McCook asked what became’of this old companion and-that one, and Hearst told the subsequent history of allthe old miners as MeCook inquired about them. Many of them were dead, some in absolute poverty and a few had achieved Buccess. Hearst now finds the Secretary’s office pleasanter than the Senate. a) Swarr’s photogaphs are second to no artist in the State.
