senteticed to life imprisonment at San
Qtentin for the murder of R. J. Holland, will at 7:80 o'clock tonight enter the portals of the State prison
where he is destined to spend the remainder of his days unless the efforts
now being made by his attorney to
overturn the judgment. are successful.

morning to take the 5:20 o’clock train
and Deputy Sheriff Neagle proceeded
to put the eighteen-pound Oregon boot
on his ankle, the prisoner exclaimed :
“Qh, please don’t make me wear that !
I cannot bear it, It is hard enough to
go to prison for life, but this disgrace
is awful. The officer told him it must
be put on. Then he pleaded pitifully
with Sheriff Getchell who told him the
law required that such a precaution
against his escape be taken, He was

Nevada County Jobbed.
Under the above heading the Nevada
City Transcript unequivocally avers
that a job was put up by the Mechanics
Institute people in connection with the
award of a banner, on Miners’ Day, for
the most meritorious mineral display
by any county at the Jubilee Fair. A
mistake in judgment at least has been
made by the committee. Nevada
county is without doubt the banner
mining county of the State, and until
the committee decided otherwise, her
mineral display was held to be un

An air-compressor that has been in

replaced by a larger one is to be put
into the Benton-Murchie mine next
week. It will drive two drills. ‘The
