Union: Last night about 7:30. o'clock; Louis Francois, was-murdered in his cabin Jocated between Mill and Auburn streets. The fatal shot was heard by a number, of people residing in the vicinity. A few minutes later George Smith, who has associated with the dead man for over twenty years and who. was regarded as a partner by him, entered the house of H. H. Reynolds, a neighbor, and excitedly said ‘Louis has shot himeelf!” and solicited Reynolds to go to the cabin with him. Mr. Reynolds procured a candle and went to the cabin with Smith, where Francois was found lying-on-the floor, a piatol by his side as if carelessly placed there. ~ Smith procured a pillow, so he afterwards head and also laid his arms across his breast. Cerener Daniels was _ notified and. when-} he reached the cabin found Francois in the position above’ stated. He immediately summoned a jury. __ Smith, who was intoxicated, was ‘questioned somewhat, and said that when the shot was fired he was twenty feet away. from the cabin ; that Francois had gone] into hia (Smith's) room and taken his (Smith’s) pistol and comm itted suicide. This statement is certainly untrue, as the subsequent examination by. Dr, Jamieson shows that Francois could not have taken his own life by any mannér or means. dead man’s mouth was filled with blood. The bullet entered the left arm, passed inwardly and fractured the fourth rib ; penetrated the left lung, severed the thorassic worta, and ledged in seventh dorsal vertebre. Death was instaneous. Francois could not possibly have placed . the weapon in a position to inflict the wound, The deceased was in Upton’s saloon about three-quarters of an hour before the tragedy occurred, and was in the best of spirits and not intoxicated. He procured a bottle of liquor and went home. It, is supposed Smith was there with’ him. No one witnessed the murder, but it. was reported that one of the neighbors openly charged Smith with the crime. She also said she heard a quarrel over in the cabin, It is known that Smith and Frencoig had frequent quarrels when under the intluence of liquor, and on one occasion Smith cut his partner with a knife. The Coroner's inquest will be held this morning. The deceased, Louis Beancois, wae about forty-eight years old. He was with Admiral Farragut at the bombardment of New Orleans during the Civil War. For many years was empleyed at. the Lime Kiln, Of late he has been about town doing odd jobs, Smith spent the night in the city jail. 6 Paid Into the Treasury, The follewing amounts were paid in to the county treasury for the past fiscal month: Samnel J. Something the People of Nevada City Should Vote to Have. “ Nevada City needs a new charter. The present one is deficient and also inadequate in many respects. Under existing conditions the Board of . City Trustees are kept within very narrow limits in the exercige of their official duties, and are prevented from doing many things which should be done and which our impertance and presperity as a town démand, The street improvements cou ld-be made more general with @ differen; charter. A better system ef sewerage is is out of the question now, owing to--4the limit of the-tax levy and ¢he clause in the charter forbidding the Trustees from imourring an indebtedness in excess ‘ef the revenues. There” is no power given to iseue bonds. By, adopting a uew.charter_ the . coporate limits could be extended so as to greatly increase the population and the to the revenue of the city. Several years ago the proposition to procure a new gharter was submitted to our citizens but it was defeated by a large ‘majority. -The--people were afraid of a. ‘change, the results following’ the adoption of the new State Constitution being still fresh in their minds, and they resolved to let well enough alone. How the majority regard the question now we are not preparéd'to say, although we believe the public generally are more disposed to favor a new form ef local government than they were then. Thére is no question but what it would be a long step forward in the march of progress, and the proposition, if submitted to the voters of the town at the election in May, should receive their hearty endorsement, oe NEVADA CITY HOTEL ARRIVALS. Messenger: On the Slate Creek Basin we find two of the largest ‘‘River” or ‘‘Tailing Mining Enterprises” of unquestionable richness in the bed of Slate creek that have been promulgated. One commenced during the last year by Hon. J. W. Moyle, ex-State Senator of Sierra county, large stockholder of Slate Creek Gravel Gold Company, (Limited) an English Syndicate farmed by himself-and friends in London in February ;
1893, with a capital stock of $500,000, to mine the auriferous rich tailing deposits and gravel beds, etc., in Slate creek. They conFitzsimon Heard From. It is predicted that if this company is able to werk this proundwith these—appliances and thei outlined plan, they will take out more-muney-than-has~-been~obtained from the best paying mines in Plumas or Sierra counties, as these accumulated tailings and the original gravel in Slate creek are immensely rich in gold as proven by Brewster and Haworth 20 or 25 years age when they . owned a tunnel through the long point under the St. Louis road, enabling them, after short while at the upper end of said tunnel, yielding eight to twenty-five dollars a day, to the man, shoveling tailings into sluices «>= The follewing season they were prevented from working any more on account of the introduction and workings of several dozen monitors in the hydraulic gravel mines on the channels above them, soon barying the upper and lower end of said tunnel, including bridges, across the creek out of sight. — 20 WANT MORE MONEY.
