Drag! Store, . fHE DAILY TRANSCRIPT Propeleiies, -‘SHOULD BE ABOLISHED. § A Costom Not in Harmony gs Advanced Civilization. With It is customary in this and other cities, on the occasion of a funeral, for the officiating minister to prate about a’ variety of religious subjects-of which he is often densely ignorant, He grasps the opportunity of dilating on the horrors of’ death, the wages of sin and the immortality of the soul— which, by the way, hg knows no more about than a California sunbeam knows of a Kansas cyclone. Particularly is this the case when a clergyman officiates at the funeral of some poor unfortunate who has met his death in an unusual manner. When the horror of the accident, which cannot help but ‘intensify the pangs of sorrow which are already manifest in the bosoms of the bereaved ones, is depicted in fiery language asa ‘“‘lesson’”’ and a ‘‘warning’’ to all young men to ‘‘forsake their evil ways and join the church.” These do not mean any intentional harm; in fact, they sincerely aim to do good and whatever injury acerues is committed through ignorauce rather than otherwise. : But they do Onfliet injury despite their goodintentions. No one with intelligence and their five senses could have sat in the Congregational-Church on the occasional of the funeral of the young man who so sadly met his fate at the: Providence mine and listened to the heartrepding discourse of the pastor‘in which he ‘purposely magnified the hideousness’ of the catastrophe in ministers order to force his audience into ‘a realizing sense of the hopelessuess of their condition, If the feelings of those who nad no affinity with the deceased were intensified to a high degree, what must have been the condition of the minds and hearts of those who were left, friendless by such a bereavement’? The heart of man consolation is. less suscepwhen burdened by great sorrow, and to add to the intensity of that sorrow by stirring up memories of the past and referring to the accident’ to make religious capital is an unpardonable error on the part of any clergyman, We consider that the ritual prepared for such ceremonies is adequate for all purposes, and the introduction of harum-scarum sermons that rend the heart and confuse the mind should be abolished. We appeal to the humanitarian sense of the clergymen of this city, and we hope never again to witness a minister throwing broadsides into the devil’s camp, as they are pleased to term it, while relatives are being borne from the church in a fainting condition, A word te the wise is sufficient. SAMUEL Burier, + Oe + A NICE’ ENTERT AINMENT. tible to The Recital Given_by_Richard Foote Last Evening. A large and intelligent audience of ladies and gentlemen assembled at Nevada ‘heater last evening to listen to the recital given by Richard’ Foote, The various numbers were ll well rendered, Mr, Foote being in splendid voice, and the recitations were greatly appreciated, The imitations of noted actors were to many a most pleasing feature of the entertainment. Mr, Foote recited ‘'The Bells,” by Edgar Allen Poe, in a masterly manner, and the scene from Richilieu was a fine piece of dramatic work. Miss Belle Morton and pupils played very nicely on their guitars and were encored twice. The entertainment was.one of the pleasantest’ and most refined exhibitions given in our ity fora long time. + 2@e+N.C C. A. C. The Assessors Will’ Make Impartial Assessment. The Grass Valley Tiding says: County Assessor Martin and his deputies, who are now at work in Grass Valley, have adopted an impartial plan-for the assessment f business lots in Grass Valley and Nevada City. They distrigt each city, as it were, selecting the business center as a point for the maximum assessment. The other sections of the city are graded down from that, the valution, of course, depending upon its nearness to or remoteness from the business heart. The maximum ‘valuation in the two cities named is $26 per front foot upon lots of a uniform depth. This will be the basis of valuation on Mill street, as far south as Neal, and.wpon Main street between Church and Auburn, The same valuation will govern in Nevada City upon Broad street from a péint above the bridge to Pine street, and down the latter street to Commercial. The portions of the principal streets beyond the points above named will take a lower valutation, This plan will tend to equalize assessments. The Tidings reporter was shown cases where two lots, almost adjoining each other in the sections mentioned, were assessed for largely different amounts, although of exactly the sane frontage and depth, The assessment of lots is not dependent upon the quality of improvements thereon, A lot as such should have an assessment corresponding to itsown value, It is found that the plan here mentioned will increase assésament upon many showing, apparently, that previous valuations had been governed by the quality of improvements. This should not have been the case, Our Assessors are working on the right principle, and despite many kicks which may be registered, we hope they will fotlow it out. + 7@e+ For the Chancel Window Fund. lots, A tea will be given at the residence of Dr. and Mrs, R. M. Hunt on Saturday evening next, from 7 to 10 o'clock. A fee
of twenty-five cents will be charged and the proceeds: will go to the chancel window fund of Trinity‘Church. All are cordially invited, : 7 Oe r An Ugly Weapon. Tract Adjoining Grass Valley to Be Plotted. short time! a new thing in the real estate affairs of Grass Valley will be presented to the public. . A wide-awake citizens has his plans perfected; and will soon cause work to begin, looking to the ‘placing on the market of an’excellent tract of land, which will be subdivided by well-surveyed streets and avenues, and then sold off in building lots upon the installment plan. It is a tract made up of various different purchases, which will be all thrown into one plot. The ground will, be cleared of all. caumbering structures, ’ brush, etc., and the various blocks will’ be surrounded’ by neat, well-. painted fences. Al]l this will be done before a single lot is offered for sale. The tract is large enough, and near enough to the heart of the city, so that it will deserve a. title as a particular ‘‘Addition to Grass Valley.” We are not authorized to give the exact location of the tract-at this time, but— citizens will: soon be made aware of particulars in this respect by the beginning of actual operations. It gives the Tidings pleasure to make notice of contemplated improvement of this sort. It shows that the modern spirit of improvement is with us, = <cbeu : Mine Bonded. . : ‘ Telegraph: Monday Timothy Hurley aud others bonded the General Grant mine. The mine is located about half a mile southeast of Forest Springs and is owned by Martin Ford, Alfred Perrin. There. are two tunnels on the mine, one being about 1,000. feet in length. fully eight inches in thickness and the ore yields $65 per-tom, The last work done on this mine was in 1572 and during the active operation of the mine some $50,000 was extracted from the ledge, At a very John Tierney and fearty-tey-suitable-machinery will be! placed on the claim, —2-0@e > Ir You are weak and worn out, or have that tired feeling Hood’s Sarsaparilla is just the medicine to restore your strength and give you a good appetite. A Mine That Will Be Heard From in ee the Near Future. The work of remoying the hoisting works ofthe Reward mine, is being rushed ahead with all speed. ‘As soon as the machinery is in operation hoisting will be prosecuted’ through’tlig upraise from. the drain tunnel. The work of driving ahead the drain tunnel is progreasing steadily, There is no doubt in the minds of mining men who are familiar with the ground, that the Reward mine will prove one of the best in this district, It is known that there is a good ledge there, and it is believed to be an’extension of the famous California mine, which when it was worked some years ago yielded quartz that paid from $40 to $60 per ton. In five years $750,000 was taken out, the ledge averaging two feet in thickness. A good ledge of high grade ore has been uncovered in the Reward, but the large quantity of water to contend with in the old shaft made it necessary to run a drain tunnel. In running this tunnel many stringers of quartz have been cut, and it-was deemed advisable, from developménts made, to move the hoisting works down to the upraise, from which point operations will be carried on. + *@e + The Habeas Corpus Case, ‘enous The writ of habeas corpus in ,the case of Hung Hi, charged with bribery, came up before Judge Caldwell this morning.
