One.day a Burniese ‘messenger
brought me a note. While he was waiting for the reply, 1 observed an object
something like a boy's popgun suspended around his waist. On asking
what it was he showed me that it was
ap implement for cing fire. It
was’a rude exampl of a scientific Instrument employed by lecturers at
home to illustrate the production of
heat by suddenly compressed air. A
Piston fitted into the tube: the former
was hollowed at the lower end and
smeared with wax to recefve a. piece
of cotton or tinder, which when pressed into it adhered. The tube was closed at one end. Placing the pistor at
the top of the tube, with a smart blow
he struck it down and immediately
withdrew it with the tinder on fire, the
sudden compression of the air having
ignited it. I was so much struck with
the scientific ingenuity of thts rude
tmplement that I procured it from the
Burman and sent it to the Asiatic soelety of Bengal, with a short description of its uses.—‘Recollections of My

A Rhapsody of Love,
Only we two alone, engaged in bringing about for ourselves the still greater solitude of two into one. Oh, beloved, what a company that will be!
Take me in your arms, fasten me to
your heart, breathe on me. Deny me
either breath or the light of day. I
am yours equally, to live or die at
your word. I shut my eyes to feel
your kisses falling on me like rain, or
still more like sunshine—yet most of
all like kisses, my own dearest and
best beloved! — From an “English
Woman’s Love Letters.”
A Quaint Introduction.
On one occasion the dean of Wells
in introducing B. A. Freeman, whom
he could abide neither as man nor
historian, said: “I rise with great
pleasuré to propose the health of our
eminent neighbor, Mr, Freeman, the
historian, a man who, in his own personal characteristics, has so often depicted for us the savage character of
our first forefathers.”

His Accent and His Country.
On one occasion during a visit to
America Michael Gunn, who assisted
Gilbert and. Sullivan in bringing out
many of their operas, was trying the
voices of some candidates for the chorus. One of them sang in a sort of
affected Italian broken English. The
stage manager. interrupted. “Look
here,” he said, “that accent won't do
for eailors or pirates. Give us a little
less Mediterranean and a little more
Whitechapel.”
Here Gunn turned and said: “Of
what nationality are you? You don’t
sound Italian.”
The other suddenly dropped his Italjan accent and in Irish said, “Shure,
Mr. Gunn, I’m from the same country
as yourself.”
