“WILL WEAR TAN SHOBS,
Dan 7. Cole WH Appear in the a 18
Dude Style.
The following startling and interesting
news comes to us from the Bay city: The
California delegates to the National Repablican Convention are going to. St. Louis
well dreased and in as fine 8 special train as
ever pulled out of San Francisco. It. -wae
‘understood from the very start that they
would observe the ordinary custom of
any other State, but many of the delegates
themselves do not yet know, that in the
selection of their convention gatb they are
bound by iron clad rules. .
The whole thing was settled at a meeting of the committee on arrangements, composed of Cole, Spreckels and Hale, at the
Union league Club Monday.
The first question that came up was the
transportation. It was quickly settled.
«We must have the best conveyance in the
land,” said Hatbor Commissioner Cole, and
all agreed with him. So it was decided to
travel in & Sunset special composed of four
coaches and a dining car and a combination
car, containing a buffet, barber shop and
other conveniences. Ten o'clock on the
morning of June 11th was set as the time
for departure,
Next ‘dress was considered. The committee wrestled with this problem some
little time, because of Commissioner Cole’s
strong fight egainst the shoe regulation,
Hale suggested that tan shoes were the only
fo (Bear to. properly set off the articles of
attire already decided upon.
“Now, I’m not kicking on the color unleratand,” broke. in Cole, ‘‘but I haven't
bad anything but a boot on my foot for
nigh on to forty y ears, and I don’t propose
to wear shoes, and I won’t wear shoes.”
It wana big task to move that Harbor
Commissioner, bat Hale of Sante Clara
finally budged him by raising » strong objection to white vests. 5
When he attacked the white vest he hit
Cole in a soft spot. The latter is partial
to white vests, and every blow Hule delivered against that article seemed to soften
the Commissioner toward the tan shoes, At
last he was whipped completely into line,
After the smoke of the battle between
