MAY 21, 1898 JOR MRDRANA, How He Took Bis Sentence of {2 Years ; in Prison, _ Ae stated in a telegraphic dispatch. yesterday to the Transoriet, ‘Joé Me _ drana was sentenced to twelve years. imprisonment. The Bee says Judge Hart administered a terrible warning tomen who think that their authority . . over their wives extends to the matter of their life or death:’ He sentenced Joe Medrana, convicted by a jary-of assanit with intent to murder his wife, to a term of twelve years imprisonment at the Folsom ‘penitentiary. Jadge Hart said that because of the candor of the defendant on the witness stand, he would not inflict the extreme punishment, which is fourteen years. © : When Medrana heard the sentence which will confine him in prison for twelve years, he said, without bravado or show of softer emotion: “Thank you, Judge,” . Medrana’s wife was not in the Courtroom when sentence was pronounced . In passing judgemut upon the prison6r, Judge Hari said that the circumstances of Medranu’s crime were atrocious, although the conduct of his young wife Was pot’ all that it should have been. Medrana had been married to her but a few weeks, and she should not have appeared on the streets of at dinner with another'man without having obtained her husband’s consent. When she was brough t to her room by the husband, the latter choked her un‘till she was almost dead. “In fact, he thought she was dead; but finding ‘her returning to life he stabbed her twice. . . When an officer arrived Medrana fied the place. .There was no doubt that he intended to kill his wife and knew thoroughly what he was doing. Judge Hart said there was no law which justified a man in taking the law into his own hands. If he cannot get along with his wife, his duty is to separate from her. Of eourse, there are times when men’s impulses drive them to rasb'acts; but that does not interfere with their responsibility to the law. If his wife was found in any way unfaithful he should have invoked the law. Judge Hart remarked, before sentencing Medrana that he did not consider him altogether abandoned. “GRISP BACON, He Who Did Not Write ‘Shakespeare's Plays. “A man’s nature rans either to herbs or weeds, therefore, let him seasonably water the one and destroy the other.” In other words, cultivate your powers and put aside the things which rob you of strength and energy, which can be turned into money and fame. «~ OF course “the crowd” float along and don’t care much what happens, so they can deaden the body with narcotvine desire to amount to something in this world, and to these such words are addressed. : If you have constitution enough to stand whisky, coffee and tobacco, well and good. If not, trade them off for success, and that only comes as a result of energy enough to apply oneself, , If coffee interferes in the least with it. Success is worth more than coffee. Use the food drink, Postum. It has much the color and taste of coffee but brain, and the beverage is of a most tovthsome character. Sold by grocers, All Things Will be New. It would be scarcely too much to say that in tbe history of the American ginning of a new era, says ah exchange. That our merchant marine should resisted every attempt of the patriotic are no thanks due. When we took her away from home, people would ask, ‘ How did that child burn her face?’ She was completely covered with scabs fora long time. She suffered everything. .At last we concluded to try Hood’s Sarsaperilla, because I had great faith in it, and aiter awhile we could see that she was getting better. It is now a year since she was cured by Hood’s Sarsaperilla, and her face is as Smooth and White and Soft -as that of any child. I believe Hood’s Sarsaparilla to be the best family medicine that can be obtained. I take it myself for headache and that tired feeling, and I have found nothing to equal it.
