A Younig-Philadelphia Husband’s Attempt at Carpentering. 4 newly-married man who had never ‘had much experience in doing small jobs about the hotischold, says.the Phil adelphia Record, told several of his as: sociates of his first attempt to gain his wife’s approval by doing-a favor for her. “You know I am very fond of dogs,” fox terrier pup, and he was so full of ginger that he chewed up everything nearly worried. my wife's pet cat to} ‘death. ‘Then she that I get a carpentér to build a pén in the yard for him. 'Then I called my wife to bring out the ‘pup, and I also expected to receive her congratulations. .Triumphantly I placed the dog inside the inclosure and then waited to have my wife bestow her praise. The pup-walked around the inup the coarse netting as easily as if it had been a stepladder and fell over on the outside, and he’s been at Tiberty ever since.” HIS HEART, DISLOCATED. ; Wantea Prof. Stratton to Find It with the X Rays. A good story is going around the campus of the University of Chicago. On ‘a recent Saturday afternoon while Prof. Stratton, of the department of physics, together with an assistant, was 4 busy, working over the anode-cathode-Xray problem, and incidentally wondering whether, Chicago was beating Hlinois—hisalma mater—down at Champaign, a timid knock was heard at the laboratory door. The knocker, was told to enter the sanctum, the floor of which was strewn with the debris of: tubes which had been tested and found wanting. When the professor looked up from his work he beheld a middle-aged man, who appeared.to be of the laboring class. He-was accompanied by a friend. He anxiously inquired whether he had reached the place where the X rays were dispensed free of charge. He was told there was none on tap, but.a new consignment. was looked for every minute from which ‘great results were expected. The questioner then tolda pafrom “dislocation of the heart,” and wished the “new light” turned on to ascertain the exact whereabouts of that body., He was.told that nothing could said he. “Well, I purchased a fine little . © ' closure and then deliberately climbed . thetic tale of. how he was suffering} . Washington: Farniture jiture Imitated and Offered for Sale as Real. George Washington’ s desk, together with some other pieces of his furniture, is;in the governor’s room at the New York city hall, says the Collector, and a very well-kept, convenient looking. desk itis, made of well-polished mahogany, and with lots of room for the Visitors to this room are inclined to doubt the age of the desk. Enterprising furniture makers got its dimensions a year ago, and promptly flooded the country with George Washington desks. They are close reproductions, und ‘several of them have been held in country towns as the original desk. A dealer in antiques received a letter from a New England town last week asking what he would pay for George Washington’ s desk. The writer said that it was im perfect condition, and he could establish its identity by comparing it with the old pictures of George Washington’s furniture. “Probably: the -writer was honest in or iginal, ”* said the dealer, “but of course it is only one of the many counterfeits that have been made. . “There is hardly a historic piece of old furniture but has been counterfeited, and every week I receive letters from country people who have found ene of these productions, and, believing it. to be genuine, offer to sell it for a large price. Some of these reproductions ony an expert can niga i attic The Scottish Monarchy. Malcom, the first king of Scotland, who lived in the eleventh century, was put to death by Macbeth, perhaps not exactly as described by Shakespeare, byt at all events the plot of the great dramatist’s play is strictly true to history. The Scottish monareby is of much e] antiquity, Malcom having been the 58th °} réigming sovereign after Fergus 1. founder of the kingdom. Suez Canal Profits, The Suez canal represents at present a clear profit income of over £ 1,600,000 a year, and this, too, means a saving to: the commerce between:east and westiof over £2,000,000a year. Its politicaland ae value is somewhat problematical, since the sinking of a single ship or dredger would render it impassible. The Most Crowded Spot. ‘It is stated that the most crowded j’spot;on thé earth’s surface is the “Manderaggio,” in the city of Valetta, in Maita. Upon a spot in this place. fewer than 2,574 live. This is at the rate of 636,000 per square ‘mile, or 1,017 to an acre. ee < hed Ether bat to COMPAR ge irs ion oO ci lace of business, Poostion of werks, ‘sonth neisco, fornia.
