ALMOST CAUGHT IN THE ACT.
He Is Supposed to Have Set the
Fires at Legg & Shaw’s Fur' niture Store.
The suspicions aroused by the fire which
breké out at the residence of Joh Vivian on Coyote street. Wednesday evening,
caused the officials to be on the alert. Investigation led them to suspect that Fred
Vivian, son of Johnson Vivian, was the incéndiary, and a specialwatchman was
detailed to keep an eye onhim. The neighbors also watched the young man closely,
having been notified by the officers that he
was suspected of being the guilty party and
might pessibly make another attempt.
Last evening about hatfpast 7 o’clock
young Vivian was seen to énter his bedpull down the blind. A few minutes later
he left the house and ran down street.
Almest simultaneously with his departure
the whole room seemed to take fire.
Special watchman Black, assisted by
Vivian’s father, .extinguished the flames.
Kerosene had been poured all over the bed
and then set fire to.
‘Vivian had proceeded down the street but
a short distance when the fire bell tapped

A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT.
Frightful Manner.
neon, says the Union, a most serious accident occured at the North Star mine which
may result fatally to Samuel Kitto, and by
which Stephen Davey was painfully in jured.
A truck-load of men were descending the
shalf. Stephen Davey was carrying an iron
scraper used by miners, and when within
ten feet of their destination the scraper came
in contact with a post in the shaft. The
sharp end of the scraper penetrated Davey’s
arm at the muscle and then went into poor
Kitto’s body just below the right nipple,
penetrating deeply and into the'right lung.
The scraper was made ef three-eighths of an
inch iron and it was all doubled up out of
sight when pulled from the body of Kitto.
The unfortunate man “was immediately
brought to the surface, where all that was
possible was done for him until medical assistance arrived. Kitto was taken home
on a stretcher by his fellow workmen, as he
could not sitfer to ride ina wagon. At the
home of Mrs. Nankervis, Kitto’s sister,
Dr. Jones made an examination and found
that Kitto was so badly injured that nine
chances out of ten he would die before morning. The doctor probed for six inches and
found the wound was even yet deeper
and that the right lang was penetrated.
Kitto suffered agonizing pain and bled
profusely. The dovtor fearing that he
would bleed te death or inflamation would
