‘About Commencing
Active Work.
The prospects of the new bridge being completed over Deer Creek (te
take the place of Suspension bridge)
very faint and it now looke doubtful
for work to begin on the. structure before the first part of next year. The
time designated iv the contract of the
Stockton bridge.builders with the City
Trustees in which the new bridge was
to be completed, was December 15th,
but as yet there has been no evidence
of active work on thé structure. Some
time ago e quantity of lumber or timbers, to be used in. the construction of
the false work, was taken to the site of
the propored now bridge, but thus far
'this comprises all of the actual work
that has been done,
Itis ramored here that the Stockten
firm which secured the contract to put,
up the bridge is about to suspend bustess, the cause being, according to
rumor, of the forfeiture of heavy}
bonds for being unable to complete a
wharf bridge contract and the monetary loss entailed by loss of material,
labor, etc.,on the same by accident,
It is said that when considerable work
had been done on the pier or whart®
thatthe piles and bridge-work sunk
and caused a total loss to the contrace
tors besides forcing them to forfeit a
heavy bond which. had been given for
guaranteeing the completion of the
wharf. It is also reported that this severe strain on the finances of the firm
has so affected it, that the company ie
aow experiencing considerable trouble
in procuring iron, steel, etc. with
which to manufacture their bridges.
But as no factg.can be ellicited in the
matter until Sidney J. Peard, Olerk of
the City Board of Trustees returns
from an investigating trip to Stockton,
the rumors that are current will not
be given much credence,
Should the Stockton bridge-builders
give up the job and surrender the forfeit, it is likely that the city authorities will place the contract with the
old reliable firm of Cotton Bros, of
:. Oakland, who are ina position to put
up the desired bridge on short notice,
their bid being but $80 more than that
of the Stockton firm. ,
It will indeed be a disappointment
to the people” of Nevada City if the
new bridge is not completed by the
specified time, as all were expecting
to.see the structure completed before
the heavy part of the winter set in,
But we may not be disappointed yet.
Work Commenced.
The San Francisco firm which was
recently awarded the contract by the
Government to construct the three
barriers on the Yuba river, commenced
the work today with a large force of
men. Barrier No 1, et Deguerre Point
below Smartsville, was the first to receive attention and it is said all men
that wish employment can precure it
there.
