The Pioneer's Amported Pitcher!
. _— {he Colts.
ee
. Yan Sullivan Goes Into the Box For the
.Lattor-andSurprisesthePioneers,
There were eat Seite as
many people at Watt Park yesterday as‘.
there were on the preceding Sunday,
but ‘the gate receipts accounted for
‘were $114 which amount was more by
nearly seven dollars than the Colts
were told had been taken in the week . ~
before.
The “features” of yesterday’s game,
as the Jayville Buzoo would say, were
the pitching of D’Costa of Fresno, the
lame arm and broken finger of Wilcox:
of the Colts, the altogether unexpected
variety and speed of the curves put.on
exhibition by Sullivan when he went
into the box at the opening of the
fourth inning to relieve Wilcox, the
strict’ impartiality and intelligenve
with which Overmeyer of the Monarchs
ampired, and last but not least the po-!
lite and hospitable treatment whiéh the .
players and other visitors from the.
county seat received at the Park and
on their way to and from that point.
The game was listless and the crowd
was frigid. The Colts knew they were
out-classed as soon as they heard that '
DeCosta, one of the greatest pitchers
of the west, along with catcher Thomma
and second baseman McHale, all star
professionals, had been called from the
cow country to still further strengthen
the already strong Pioneers. Adding
to this that on last Tuesday the Colts’
regular pitcher had fractured a finger,
nge. and was further afflicted by a lame arm
through indulging in an excessive
amount of practice last. week in his desire to get ready to play the game of
his life, the only wonder is that the
Colts made as good a showing as they
did. While all of DeCosta’s work was
marvelous, his out-drops were simply
incomprehensible, and most of the Ne®ivada City boys fell easy victims to
their windings and sudden descents.
As the score shows he was found for
only five safe hits. Of the base hits to
the credit of the Pioneers, eleven were
made off the crippled Wilcox in the
first three of the innings, and Sullivan,
who was then substituted as a last resort, covered himself with glory and .
became the hero of thé hour by being
touched for only three safe strikes in
six innings, and but two of these went
out of the diamond. His work mystifled not only the regular Pioneers who
are famed in local circles as batters,
but he fanned out the trio of professionals with the same ease. That was
not all “Kid” Sullivan did. He stole
three bases, caught Thomma napping
at first and played a sure, nace
game all through.
Of the 27 put outs for the Pioneers
DeCosta is credited with sixteen and
IT. Hogan, the clever first baseman,
with nine. The rest of them had very
iittle to do,
Next Sunday, the weather being fair,
the Colts and Pioneers will play at
Cashin Field. If the Grass Valleyans
do not import a pitcher of DeCosta’s
clase it will be a safe bet that the Colts
will win. Another thing indicated by
yesterday’s game is that when the next
game is played by the Colts and the
Monarchs the latter will be defeated
handily, this prediction being based on
the fact that the Monarchs are already
playing the best ball that they have
capacity for, while the Colts are improving daily.
