THE TRANSCRIPT. Established Sept. 6, 1880. by Nat. P. Brows & Co. @VADA CITY, NEVADA CO., CALIFORNIA BROWN & CALKINS.MON JAY. . 5.. oe. NOV. 15, RET RSME 1897. THR MINING INDUSTRY. Hotes and Comments: of Informatio) and Interest to Miners. As compared with twenty-five years ago, forty per cent more gold can ncw be extracted from the same ore at a : less cost of thirty per cent. It is believed that the mil! at the Dalmatia mine, Ei Dorado county, , Cal., was the first quartz mill on this coast to be run by electricity, the installation buving been in September The Salt Lake, Utah, Tribune notices the fact that cyanide works are quietly ginning to demand fortheir patients being established in a small way in Many. parts of the West, and run like oe alty. Rich ore is by no means synonymous with large profits.’ The character of the ore, the size of the vein, the situation -of the mine, and the water supply are now the chief factors in what is purely a commercial problem. The most noticeable difference between Idaho and Nevada mines is that in the former the percentage of gold in the ore increases with depth; in the latter, usually, the deeper the mine the greater the percentage of silver. While miners’ wages in California rulé as high and in some instances higher than elséwhere, there are no mote $4 per day' jobs, the sual price now paid being from $2 50 to $3 per day. The Comstock, Nevada, and some Butte, Montana, mines still pay $4 per day. The Witwatersrand district, South Affica, is a good example of what sciénce has done for mining. That district in the last four years has produéed $7,385,000 ounces of gold. This production has largely beén made possible by the ‘cyanide process. The whole thing is a chemical problem; successfully solved. Another illustration is the reduction in the cost. of milling quartz at the Treadwell, Alaska, mine to about one dollar per ton. Gold is the one commodity that has risen in value for the last ten years with marked constancy. The wages of the gold miner are the only wages that ‘ have not depreciated. California is the one commonwealth that produces annually more gold than any one of the other forty-four States. The market produced by the needs of the gold miners of California is the one demand most productive of satisfactory payment to farmers, manufacturers and merchants. The San Francisco County Miners’ Association is the one city organization that sees this, that wants to develop gold mining in California, that wishes to thus advertise the State’s gold resources and afford opportunities for profitable investmant. This is why the Mining and Scientific Press supports the new movement. In season and out of season this paper has steadily advocated these ideas, and gladly joins with any earnest practical effort along those lines looking to public benefit.—Mining and Scientific Press, Greeks as Fighters, Smolenski had placed a battery of mountain guns on a plateau overlocking the village of Velestino, and along the y base thi 1. t i ter the first publication of this notice, to the Ev ratligowlt a mae phy nee pore . said Sduninteeenerts at the office of I. J the ground and by intrenchments. ‘The battery on the plateau played on ,the Turkish advance with great effect, and the order was given by the Turkish commander to charge it. The Turkish infantry swung clear, and the cavalry, led by a young officer, came on in column, first at the trctand then at a swinging gallop. It seemed a mad undertaking for cavalry to charge a battery of well served artillery planted on the crest of a long, steep slope. The brave horsemen were met with . tention to make final proof in support of her salvos of shells which plowed through . ¢laim, and that said proof will be made betheir ranks.) The couple had lived. happily togeth: er for nearly 50 years, and when th wife died her husband seemed utterly unable at first to act or even think fo: himself. The funeral was taken ii charge by an energetic niece, and, according to those who were present, everything was conducted with propriety. ‘One of the neighbors stopped’ to ‘speak to the poor old widower when the last ‘*William,’’ she said, laying a kindly hand on her old friend’s shoulder, “I think everything was beautifol.
