Pipe Smoking. ;
There are many pipe smokers who do
fot know how to get the best there is
out of their indulgence. The great
point in pipe smoking is to smoke slowly. Nervous smokers smoke too rapidly
and burn their tongues with hot smoke,
besides falling entrely to get the fullest and best flavor out of the tobacco.
It is all a matter of habit, but. slow
smoking is a habit which it is hard
for some people to acquire. In some
cases pipe smokers have tried for years
to check their smoking speed without
success. They began too late, and the
habit of rapid smoking is shaken off
with difficulty when it is once acquired.
Rapid smoking is as bad as rapid
eating—or worse. It is also “bad form.”
. Whether it is cigar, pipe or cigarette,
the smoking should be deliberate in order to get the fullest enjoyment. It is
especially so with a pipe.—New York
Press.
The Chances In Policy.
The retired “poke” shopkeeper was
explaining to -his interested bearers
some of the mysteries of his former
business.
“The chances of winning at the policy game,” he said, “are about like this:
You take a bushel basket and fill it
with small white beans, Then you
put one small black bean Into the basket and shake the lot-up. After that
go to some ‘skyscraper building, say
one about 29 stories high, and place a
penny on the sidewalk in front of it.
This done, shoulder your bushel of
beans and take the elevator to the roof
of the building. Then lean over the
edge of the roof and, aiming at the
cent on the sidewalk below, dump: out
the beans, in the basket all together.
Then burry down on the elevator and
rush out to the sidewalk. If you find
that the black bean has fallen upon the
penny; you win.”’—New York Times

Brain-Food Nonsense.
Another ridiculous food fad has been

An old sore or ulcer is not only a source of great bodily discomfort and pain, but the
constant care, worry and anxiety over one of these malignant festering places produces an

of strength and vitality. An eating, lingering ulcer naturally fills the sufferer with fear _

Washes, salves, nor anything else applied directly to the sore can do any permanent good ;
neither does the use of the knife or flesh destroying plaster cure, for local causes have nothin .
to do with these germ-breeding plague spots. You might cut out every particle of the di
flesh and serape the bone, but another sore would come. ‘The germs or poison in the blood must
be destroyed, the stream of sluggish, polluted blood purified and made strong before the healing process begins and the sore or ulcer can get well. §S. S. S. is the only remedy known that.
can and does accomplish this. I t cleanses and purifies the circulation, and when new, rich blood
is carried through the little veins and arteries to the sore, it brings about a healthy healing
around the edges, and a permanent and thorough cure is soon effected. S. S. S. not onl
expels all impurities, but works a complete and radical
-change in the entire system by stimulating inactive organs,
toning up the nerves, increasing the appetite, and aidin
the digestion and assimilation of food, thus building np the
weak and* wasted constitution. §. S. S. is st¥ictly and
entirely a vegetable medicine, and no bad effects follow
its use, and for this reason it is better than oot
stubborn -otash or other minerals, which not only ruin the stomach, but often produce most
ad offensive sores themselves.
