Jack McCarthy Sentenced. _
In the case of J. J. McCarthy,
convicted of perjury, A.D. Mason, attorney for defendant, yesterday moved for a new trial, basing the motion principally on affidavits by T. McLaughlin and
Hugh Dundon wherein. these parties alleged that they heard Evan
Sleeman, Jr., one of the jurors,
say during the progress of the tiial
that he did not know what McCarthy was being tried for, etc.
Sleeman denied in an affidavit the
charges of McLaughlin and Dundon. The motion for a new trial
was denied and the prisoner was
sentenced to fourteen. years in the
State Prison at Folsom.

time there. The only inmates of

21¢ years in San Quentin, for burglary.
Geo. Rogers, burglar, brought
from San Quentin, where he is

used as a witness.
A. Salvador, to be tried today
for sluice-robbing.
August Wilson, arrested for insanity, and to be taken to his
brother in San Francisco.

The Slattery-Roddd Fight.
The Virginia City Chronicle of
Wednesday says:
This afternoon W. Skewes covered the $100 put up by Jerry McCarthy, James Slattery’s backer
in the proposed hard-glove match
with James Rodda. The following
agreement awaits the signature of
McCarty to conclude the preliminaries :
‘We, the undersigned, agree to
fight a square Sacto fight to a
finish, with hard gloves, according
to the Marquis of Queensberry
rules, for $100.a side, or more if
upon, the winner to take
all receipts and pay all expenses.
The fight shall be in public or
private; as shall hereafter be
a upon, and shall not take
place later than Saturday, May 8,
1886.”
Skewes furthermore offers to increase the stake money to $250 a
side, provided Slattery’s backers
agree to fight Rodda in Nevada
City on the above date.
