MISMANAGEMENT WILL DESTROY
People have such mystic conceptions
of mining properties and the mining
business, says the Blue Mountain
American, They do not apply the
game quiet rules of energy, intelli
gence and honesty prescribed in every
other avocation. Many are, prone to
regard mining some sort of an excep
tion, which will enrich votaries or defeat their hopes with the whimsica!
irregularity of fate’s strokes. Fre
quently the motto of an old promoter
General John Gashweiler, is quoted.
i. e., “D——n a mine that cannot stand
bad management.”
Nothing is more absurd than this
thought analyzed by modern mining
intelligence. We all concede readily
that there are some mines which mismanagement cannot destroy. Those
are the rare deposits of the precious
or useful metals which are so near the
pure state that, once found, they cannot be lost till exhausted, and the
margin of profit over mining and reducing the ore is so enormous that
the most shameless waste cannot re
duce it to loss. Such cases are found
in mining, but perhaps im no othe:
industry. There is no commercia)
venture, no manufacturing enterprise
no bank and no farm that mismanage
ment cannot ruin.
But such mines form a small part
of the real producers in the long list.
Between the brightest type mentioned
and the vein filled with bull quartz
are properties representing every de
gree of enrichment. There are scores
where the deposit is so widely disseminated that the best economics of
the profession, substantial financial
support, and most astute management
eannot establish a profit.
these are other properties where such
management will yield a fair revenue,
but in the hands of any save the best
managers, fail. A little higher are
mines where ordinary management
may be successful, and so on up the
scale, intelligence required decreasing
in proportion to the increase in values
or less difficulties of operation. Such
as General Gashweiler, who damn any
mine not capable of standing bad management, confess their inability to apply intelligent mining methods, and
would never be able to touch such
properties as the Homestake and the
Treadwell. —
