Thursday night, says the Chronicle. . For
six years Jeong was employed by J. B. Low
of 709 Broderick street as a domestic. On
the night of the 14th of the present month
was absent,.that he had discovered the front
door opened, and make known his suspiciens that there were burglars in the house.
Mrs, Lew, who beside her daughter was the
only one of the family at-home, became
frightened and:sent word to the police headquarters. Two detectives were dispatched
te the house at once, and they searched
every room, aided by the Chinese servant,
Nothing was discovered, although Mrs, Low
in the meantime had found’ that a -pair of
diamond earrings, for which her husband
had paid $550 in New York, were missing,
beside $40 in coin.”
The police authorities looked further into
ethe-matter, however, and became convinced
fiat the theft had been committed by some ore
in the house. Suspicion fell on the Chinese,
and Cox and Glennon kept a watch on him.
Yesterday afternoon they saw him go to the
jewelry store of P. P. Schmidt, 1034 Market
street. He gotaring there for which he
paid $3.50. The detectives afterward learned
that this was for the settings, and that he
had brought the stone there several days
before. :
After getting the ring Jeong got om a
Powell-street car, but-only rede two blocks.
He then went to D. Cohen's jewelry store,
at-1014 Market strdet, and offered to sell
the ring.for $65.. There he was arrested.
On searching him the detectives found the
ether diamond. At the office of the Chief
Jeong said that if-Mrs._Lew was sent for he
would tell the whole truth. . When she went
there he insisted that he had found the
diamonds in a little box on the doorstep the
morming following the alleged burglary.
When Mrs. Low asked why he had neglected to say anything to her about the matter he said he wanted them for himself.
