A Brief Record of Work During the Year. The following well-written review some of the mines in this district appeared in the Herald: Thinking that a brief review of the development and prospecting done they pay new owners after having been vi ually abandoned by gf ones, Really, there is not a worked out mine in Nevada district, They all have a pay shoot somewhere, and only wait for the capital and the experienced manager to come along and make them pay. Improved methods of handling water andj bY. extracting ore, and the ready money to do with, make all things possible nowadays quartz mining, Dauringethe past few years a number of old mines that once paid well bat have since beeu abandoned or been operated on a small scale, have fallen into the hands of moneyed men and yielded golden We will mention a few of them here; leaving others returns for the investments made. for another time. The principal work is being done on the Alica Belle, on the southerly part of the place Mr. Blundell has opened up this ground and found excellent ore, A tunnel was run, and afterwards a shaft sunk. The: shaft is being worked now, ten -or twelve men being employed there. Water power is used, a small hoisting works erected, and the shaft . to ten feet, is down 100 feet, at which level drifting was . commenced. There is a great deal of water . to pump, and this has retarded progress somewhat, of course. A drain tunnel has been started at Deer! Creek, half a mile away, to drain the Alice Belle. This tunnel was started below the «ld Murchie drain tunnel, and will be run 1,800 feet. The two men who were set to work there had not run far when they struck quartz, aud they are now taking out good ore as they go along, About 100 yards west of the Murchie Company’s hoisting works Dave Voss is prospecting a spur of the Big Blue, and has met with remarkable success, He employs two men and has a shaft down seventy feet, and during the last thirty days has taken out about seventy tons of ore, Mr, Voss has a lease on this piece of ground, and is doing very well indeed, Garwood & Co.,-are working on tribute just east of the Murchie works. . They have sunk a shaft right alongside oi the old office, and are now down a little over 100 feet, A dump of over eighty tons of quartz shows that they have not been idle, and they are now taking only waiting fur the mill to start to have a crushing. All these claims belong to the Long. S tar Company, and Mr. Blundell has leased them out in order to get the Property developed. All have been successful so far, striking ore at slight depth, and it is claimed that most of this rock will pay $20 per ton. To crush this the old Murchie mill, down ee Nevada City, Nevada County, Calit. y A animate” work, Fifteen years ago it was worked on a large scale, and was considered a valuable property. During the past few months.enough ore has been extracted to keep the ten‘stamp will running continuously, The shaft is now down 500 feet, and another: level is to"be cut soon. An “ejector’’ is used to handle the water, and in this mine it is uved at the greatest depth known, and works very successfully, On the surface everything is changed. All the old buildings have been torn down, and anew and substantial mill and hoisting works erected. The hoisting works is a commodious one, and the machinery is’ of modern. pattern ‘and first-class in every particular, Water power: is used, and everything is neat and shipshape, The mill is one of the best we have seen, additional batteries when required; four) concentrators and a very convenient rockbreaker and feeder, Considerable sulpkurets is saved The mine has a fine plant, and one that is a pleasure to look at. — That it is paying and is satisfactory to its owner is due to its able and energetic Superintendent, A. L. Begbie, who has personally superintended every bit of the work from’ the day the property was. purchased. The mine is now called: the se Sabe,” -but like other mines whose titles have been changed, the old name will stick to it in the minds of ‘fold residenters,”’ You Deserve a Good Shaking, —_— on the creek, is being fitted up after lying And chills and fever will give it if you idle for sixteen or seventeen years. It is one of the oldest mills in this district, Eight 8 amps will be used. The old building was @ ruin, aud a great deal of work had to be done on it. W.J. O: gan is bossing the job, aad has half a dozen men at work, They have put in a Pelton water wheel, made of wood, with twelve-inch buckets—probably the largest ever seen here. The company has free water, so that cuts no figure. Anew «dam was built in the creek, the ditch fixed up, and while there is only forty feet fall, a twenty-inch pipe and lots of water wili give them plenty of power. Mr, Organ expects to have the mill in shape by next week, and there will be 250 tons of ore Waiting for it by that time. The indications are that the Murchie is to prosper once more.
