OOD EVENING, SUPERINTENDENT FAIRCHILD: That electric railroad running up to the corner of Broad and Pine streets is just fine; but do you know that there is a large namber of people who wish and say that the road gore of East and West Broad streets. Think it over, and give the TRANSCRIPT authority for saying you will do it as soon as the weather will permit. a 44444444444 ALIFORNIA is to be congratulated on having a harmonious delegation who will look after her interests in the approaching session of Congress: It has unity of purpose and community of interests coupled with political solidarity. It has the good fortune to be in political sympathy with the Administration and both Houses of Congress. Under these favorable conditions the delegation should accomplish much of value to the State and Nation, as all of] good actor: them are able and progressive men and have the best interests of our people at heart. 4e¢4644646446 3 € A Progressive People The crowded house that greeted the production of “Captain Racket” last evening and the liberal spirit of those who so generously contributed toward raising a fund for the establishment of a free library and reading room substantiates the fact that our people unanimously endorse the project and have a keen appreciation of the efforts being made by the noble-hearted and public-spirited young ladies and gentlemen who have contributed their time and talent toward the entertainment and made it the grand success that it was. Not only did our citizens show their: interest in the project by turning out in large numbers but they immediately took steps to materially increase the sum realized’ from the proceeds of the entertainment by making individual and generous contributions toward the fund. Andthe end is not in sight, either,-for this spirit-of--enterprise is very contagious in Nevada City and spreads with great rapidity when once it gets started. Early this morning one of our public-spirited citizens generously contributed $25 toward the fund, and it is probable that many more will do. likewise, for there are a number of our people who prefer to contribute privately and not in public, and all such will na doubt be given ample opportunity. At any rate, a grand start was made last night toward the establishment of a free library and reading room in our city and our people should “keep the ball rolling,” and not relinquish their zeal and enthusiasm until their efforts are crowned with success. Our local organizations and societies should plan entertainments to be given during the winter mionths for the purpose of further increasing the fund, and it is quite likely that they would be freely and liberally patronized by the public, as was the one given last cnight. Nevada City has distinguished herself of recent years by"erpeggressive ideas and improvements, and nothwould aitteStilitmee our city’s interests or add to its welfare “than @he™ t and maintenance of a free library end “weallligg “Seem 4p “Our<community. As Judge Nilon stated in ‘His speech “Gast evening, that “next to the public schools and churches, ‘Wiketuries are of the greatest importance.” “In several States,” he said, “Legislattires taxed for maintaining suitable libraries.Cities of not? the importance of Nevada were maintaining good libraries, . while this place, over fifty years of age, had not even a} free reading room. Many attempts have been made in past years to establish one, but owing to lack of funds and interest they have always proven futile. Im addition to the uplifting the moral statas of a community, a library was _always of great importance to the public schools. During the past few months a committee of ladies and gentlemen had written to Andrew Carnegie asking for a donation of $10,000 to be used. in the erection of a suitable building, and for the maintenance of a library and reading room. Should this request he shelved, along with the hundreds of others which Mr. Carmegie was daily receiving, Nevada City would have its library anyway, and that without much further ado.” Yes, our city will have a library. and reading room soon, that will be a credit to it. In fact there are very few who possess more grace and dignity and seems more at home on the stage, among our local Thespiane, than Mrs. Zeitler. Miss Martha Sims, the promoter of enterprise, is indeed deserving of 4 great deal of credit for the way in which she handled all the details of management and she may justly feel proud of the excellent manner fn which everything went off. Between the second and third acts the “Florodora Sextette made its appearance. Owing to the illness of a member, the Empire State qaartette was unable to appear, and Louis Brirkman sang a solo, which won hearty applause. Miss Maud Langman presided at ths piano.
