Nevapa Ciry Daity TRANSCRIPT e UST NIGHT. BROWN & C Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION By “ail, spe mie $6 Per Year . By Carrier, 12 i-2c Per We Delivered toany part uf the city. SATURDAY ... aac od Silec THA uke WSs ck October 11, 190 No Meddling. HE demand for the disestablishment of the Episcopal Church promises to become a leading issue in the politics of Great Britain, and preparations are now being made for a polemical war of great fury and intensity. Feeling always runs high when religious questions . "** become an issue in politics, The English church establishment is necessarily in politics, for it is a political institution, being, i in a limited degree, a branch of the government. It is opposed by all denominations{other than Episcopalians be cause the communicants of other faiths are compelled to pay tithes for the support of its clergy and its schools. Another ground for opposition is the fact that its bishops have seats in, the House of Peers. The.sovereign is its titular head, and.is sworn to defend its faith. But however annomalous the union of church gnd state may appear in these days of religious freedom, it is not the business of the people of this country to interfere with the political institutions ef another country! This truth is pertinent at this time because the opponents of the English church establishment propose to solicit contributions in the United States to carry on their propoganda. The proposition is a trifle impudent. While the injustice of making Methodists, Presbyterians, Catholics and Jews contribute to the maintenance of another church and faith is apparent, it is the business ‘of British Nonconformists to fight their own battles. Itis‘a struggle that must be fought out by the voters of Great Britain; it is a constitutional question in fact. The church has been disestablished in Ireland, and the same reasons which impelled that action apply with the same force, though in lesser degree, to the demand for disestablishment in England. Nearly three-fourths of the Irish people are Catholics, while a minority of the remainder ate Episco— palians, and this fact made the injustice of levying tithes on all alike for the support of the English church so glaring} and flagrant as to make it absolutely indefensible. But the injustice is the same whether the people so taxed constitute a majority or a minority. Nevertheless the question is one for the British people alone to decide, It is not the province of Americans to interfere in the dcggestic concerns of other nations, whether religious or politic@l, and it is to be hoped the scheme to collect contributions im this country for political purposes will be given the cold sheglder. . 4446464446444 64 HAT eight Republican Congressmen from California will be needed to make up the majority in the House of Representatives is a reasonable presumption. The present majority is only forty-five, and with the increased number of members next year it will probably be not mnch greater. If the Democrats should manage to capture as many as thirty Seats which they do not now hold, they would control the organization of the House. California Republicans should vote for their party nominees for Congress all along the line from Gillette in the north to Daniels in the south, BBC : BOHEMIAN Pure, Pale and Sparkling.
