MYUPOASCHtOSS AOR So rae Or or.0_O rt C2 Pit Od bate tc & Pee ee ee ee (PRLS ARS. CRPEO 1 TRESS gb FEO eae eg ae Sra tee ns poet ie ta pail FRIDAY Saget Slee OCT. 7, 1898. —————— THE TRANSCRIPT, (MASTERS OR pancreas Published e except Sundays aod . pang Holidays by BROWN & CALKINS. N. P, BROWN, Lt, &. CALKING, GAGE’S . STALWARF STAND. The Oakland Tribune, which is on the scene and knows whereof it speaks, gives us this gratifying assurance: The opening by Henry Gage of his personal campaign inthis part of the State has been auspicious. His receptions by the residents of San Francisco at the gathering of Saturday night and yesterday evening have been all that could be desired and it is apparent that the strength with ‘which he has swept through the other parts of the State will be undiminished — there, even though it is regarded by the Maguire men as their own particular strong‘hold. One thing that is attracting the masses to Gage is the stalwart manliness with which he presents his case to them, There is a convincing ring to his words when he tells them that if he is sent to Sacramento as their representative, no corporation, clique or individual will hold the whip-hand over him. It was only to be expected that the Democrats would start their old bogie cry of “railroad” as soon as the Republican standard-bearer took the field, but unfortunately for them, this time a'man is in the arena who is able to cast the aspersions back in ‘their teeth. “The man or corporation who thinks that if Gage is elected they will be able to control him is handlinga gold brick” said Major Frank McLaughlin one day inspeaking about the Republican nominee shortly after the Sacramento convention, and no better way of putting the situation could have been hit upon Gage is not the sort of man to fetter himself down by pledges or promises to anyone, and it is safe to say that to take a public office under such conditions would be to him the sacrificing of his honor and his manhood. He went into the fight because he was urged to do so by his many friends, and when the Republican Convention rose up and nominated him unanimously, surely there was no occasion for him to bow down before any boss in order to secure what the Republicans of the State desired to bestow on him with scarcely the asking. As regards his actions since he has taken the stump, the Democrats have been criticizing him because he saw fit to respond to the points made by his opponent,Maguire. As faras the Demcratic papers were concerned, Maguire . , could say anything without being considered as/ having delved into personalities. Yet the moment Gage responded to him they raised au outcry about his method of campaigning. Those who have heard Gage talk in public know’ that all such criticismsare unfair. He discusses the issues of the hour fairly, squarely; honestly, and without malice to anyone, the only trouble as far as his opponents are concerned being that he hits the nail on the head too often and makes them wince. Gage should be elected because he represents the best interests of the people of the State and furthermore because his personal record shows that he is in every way qualified-to assume a trust that means so much to the citizens and taxpayers of California. If he is sent to Sacramento he will make one of the best Governors the State ever had, because he will handle its affairs honestly and impartially and with fairness and justice to all alike. For Surveyor, NATIVE DAUGHTERS’ HOME, An Adjunct to the Order That Promises ~ to be Successful. The members of the parlors of. Native Daughters throughout the State are now devising ways and means for carrying into effect the plans outlined at the last meeting of the Grand Parlor for the establishment of a Native Daughters’ Home. The institution is to be condacted by a board of relief to be composed of fifteen past grand presidents and proniinent members of the order. The board is to have for its object the caring for the sick and destitute of the order beyond what is done by subordinate parlors. The proposition at this time is to secure a suitable place in San Francisco in which a home can be established, but as yet the matter is in the preliminary stages, as the committees of the board are looking fora sufficient amount of funds to warrant them in opening such a home and maintaining it forayear. Already a number of physicians, gentlemen and their services free to the home, and Alta Parlor, of San Francisco, as a starter, on motion of Grand Trustee Miss E. D. Keith, donated $100 to the board, and Oro Fino Parlor No. 9 gave a ball last night in Native Sons’ hall San Francisco, for the benefit of the board. It is expected that all the parlors will either make a money contribution or devise some entertainment to raise money for the new adjunct of the order and that it will not be long before the board will open its home, _---——-> 9OeRead Them.
