Superintendent Fred Zeitler, who was
married a few days ago at San Francisco,
did not, ‘in his supreme happinegs, forget the
employes at the Champion mine, and sent
word to havea lot of champagne and cigera
taken to the mine to treat all hands, To

appreciated hardly expresses it, and -if Mr,

Zeitler has always made it a point to give

Electrica] Works, Pittstield, Mass., and
will be hauled to the power house over the
route previously described by the TranSCRIpT. A new road has been constructed a
short distance, from the old Excelsior road
to a point on the hill above the power house.
The machines will be “snubbed” down the
hillside to the building,
Although the late storm interfered somewhat with the work of construction, everything is again life and activity in the vicinity, and the seventy odd employes areas
busy as bees, Should favorable weather
ensue for a ‘few weeks everything will be
completed, ‘The managers anticipate no
trouble from snow or other severe winter
storms, as the ditches and flumes are on the
sheltered side of the hill and can be kept

Some Rapid Riding.
A short time since Dr, Black, so well
known here, did soine very rapid riding on
@ special engine from Oakland in an effort
to reach a dangerous case of hemorrhage at
Port Gosta. The first 17 miles were made
in 12 minutes, a little less than one and
one-half miles a minute, and the whole dis—
tance of 28 miles was made in 30 minutes,
including a two minutes’ stoppage. From
our Knowledge of the curves in the last ten
or twelve miles no doubt the doctor thought
two hands hardly enough to maintain a
comfortable seat in the cab,

_ The owners of the Harmony mine are
talking of giving an underground ball at
their mine some time next month. In one
portien of the mine where it has been
worked out a large chamber was formed:
which is of sufficient dimensions to accommodate quite a crowd of people and which ren .
would afford plenty of room. for a dancing "Byrne, Phil oo
party. The mine is perfectly dry at this
point and the temperature just’ right for
comfort; Guests would be lowered in the,
car to the bottom of the shaff and walk
from there through the’tunnel‘to the ballroom, a distance of 1,500 feet. . It is ‘proposed to light up the_ tannel, shaft and
dancing room with hundreds of candles,
Good music. will be provided and -all ‘ar.
rangements made for the comfort and pleasure of every one. An underground ball
would be a decided novelty and we hope
the Harmony mine owners will decide to
give it, 2
