Tricks Again,
Last evening’s Telegraph tells’ this:
Sam D. Avery has acouple of articles
which he brought across the plains
with him in 1862. They consist: of a
frying pan and ademijohn. Sam prizes
these articles very highly and thinks
they are about the oldest in the State.
The demijohn, with bamboo casing,
(which usually comes around demijohns) bad been eaten away, for on the
desert they were out of provisions: for
all that the -horsea had to eat during
that period was the bamboo from the
demijobn and also.a few hickory whip
‘handles, Mr. Avery says that the frying pan has been in use ever since and
is as good as new. That demijohn has
also been doing daty. ever since, too.

People are not baying anything they
don’t have to, and money appears to be
scarce. The unsatisfactory odmdition
of affairs mystifies some of the’ storekeepers, from the fact that the usual
number of men are at work in the

regularly. It is probably due to the
fact that so mapvy citizens are husbanding their finances to lay in firewood
and other supplies for the winter

Pavermo, Italy, September 25.—There

southeast of here. The earth tumbled
in a sulphur mine and forty men are
entombed. It is said that about sixty

Landslides are very frequent: in that
region and there were absolutely uo
preparations for a catastrophe of that
kind. Phere is great consternation
among the inhabitants and the lamentations of the relatives of the dead and

Sulphur mining is one of the chief industries of this section. Thére are 20,000 people in Girgenti, and a large proportion of these derive their livelihood

Timber ina the Comstock Mines.
W. Alvord, in the Pro Proceedings of the

that from 1870 to 1891 there were used
in the mines and mills of the Comstock Lode 674,765,000 feet of timber

representing a total cost of about $45,000,000. About 200,000 acres of forest
have been destroyed to work these
mines, and at present the supply has
to be brought.45 miles. ‘The area on
which the forest has been destroyed is
now being covered chiefly with pine,

the trees to attain the size of those
