AINSWORTH INTERVIEWED.
He Is Arraigned Before Judge Garber
and Becomes Quite Talkative.
Edward Ainsworth, the murderer of John
M. Steele, was arraigned in Judge Garber’s
court at Marysville on Tuesday last, says
the Democrat.
; The prisoner is a sallow-complexioned
young man with blue eyes and hair as dark
as any digger Indian’s. His features, however, are regular and lean to the American .
side of ancestry, He wears the same dirty,
blue jumper and overalls that he worked in
at the riverbed in Eagle canyon. ~
After reading the complaint charging
Ainsworth with willfully taking the life of
Steele, Justice Garber asked him if he had
# employed counsel. Ainsworth looked puz: zled and said: ‘‘What is that?”
“An attorney—a lawyer,” prompted his
Honor. :
“Ob, a lawyer—well, I don’t know as it’s
necessary to have one,” responded the murderer, affecting an unconcerned air. “‘I
want to have it over as quick as possible,”
he said.
Judge Garber then fixed Wednesday,
October 3d, as the time for the preliminary
examination to take place.
At the conclusion of-the arraignment he
talked to a reporter and said“‘When I shot Steele he had one hand
behind his back and he was advancing toward me,” said the murderer. ‘‘I supposed
Z : he bad a long knife or a dirk knife in that
Ee ee +rand.—-_-knew-he-carried—them—sometimes.
And then I’ heard him threaten to kill me
just a few minutes before. It was when he
ey was sitting on the foot of thebed. Clara
3 (Mrs. Steele) was lying in the bed crying
and Steele said te her, ‘I wit] kill you and
him and the baby.’ They did not know I
was there as . came up frem the river in my
bare feet. I had been wading in the river.
The reason I came to the lodge at that hour
was-because I had made up my mind to
pick up my things and leave the place forever. Ihad heard Steele the day before
promise to kill me. I considered my life in
danger ‘and wanted to leave the place,
‘¢ Last spring Steele said to me in the
"presence of Bill and Fannie om and others: ‘Ed, I have it in for you; no matter
where I meet you—at Forbestown, Hansonville or any other place—I will kill you;
you and I will have itout.’’ He it was who
asked me to go to the river and mine with
him. I told him that if we could not agree
I had better not go. He said he would
behave himself and it would be all right.
He told me to stay with the woman, he
would not care.”
Ainsworth then told of their visit to
Sweetland last Friday and of Steele drinking considerable while there. He did not
wish to drink and he returned to-the camp
before Steele or Thurman.
_ Ainsworth. does not seem worried over
his position. He seems to think his acquittal only a matter of a few days,

This is half the title of an old song. The
balance is, ‘‘Who in triumph advances.”
The public, the press and the medical profession chant this refrain ag especially applicable to Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, chief
among American remedies and preventives
for malaria, constipation, dyspepsia, liver
complaint, nervousness, unquiet sleep, rheumatic twinges, and the truubles incident to
advanced age. It is also universally recog~
nized as a reliable tonic and appetizer. Asa
family medicine particularly suitable to
emergencies it has no equal. Lhe nervous

A Little Daughter
Of a Church of England minister
cured of a distressing rash, by
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. Mr. RicHarD
Birks, the well-known Druggist, 207
McGill st., Montreal, -P. Q., says:
I have sold Ayer’s Family Medicines
for 40 years, and have heard.nothing but
good said of them. I know of many
Wonderful Cures
performed by Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, one
tn wartieular being that of a little
daughter of a Church of England minister. The child was literally covered
from head to foot with a red and exceedingly troublesome rash, from which
she had suffered for two or three years,
in spite of the best medical treatment
available. Her father was in great
distress about the case, and, at my
recommendation, at last began to administer Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, two bottles of which effected a complete cure,
much to her relief and her father’s
delight. I am sure, were he here to-day,
he would testify in the strongest terms
as to the merits of
