Senvtor Gleaves of Redding during the last session of the Legislature said many unkind words of Major Heuer, in which is motives were impugned, Finally the Senaor preferred charges against the Major and endeavored to have him removed from the Pacific division, of which he has for years been a member of the Board of En-. gineers, also a member of thé U. 8. Debris Commission., -Major Heuer was sustained by the Secretary of War and recently . has made a survey of the Sacramento between Red Bluff and Redding. Sunday last when the party of Senators and Congressmen were at the Palace Hotel: in San Francisco prior to’ departing. on a trip to inspect the waterways Major Heuer ‘was standing conversing with them when ‘Senator Gleaves walked up to the Major and put out his hand saying, ‘‘How are you Major,” and continuing said Congressman Johnson had told him. that Heuer wished to see him. ae “*You’re a liar,” retorted the Major, “‘for Johnson never told you any such thing.” That ended the effort to settle the differences between Gleaves and Heuer, as the latter is very emphatic in expressing an opinion of the windy Senator. It is said Gleaves expected to accompany the party on the trip to Oakland and up the river Monday, but he did not go. Major Heuer did accompany them as far as Red , Bluff, where he remained to inspeet some work being done by the ‘‘Seizer” in removing river obstructions. . It is presumed the Senator took the train for Redding Monday night, but it is said he was not invited to join the delegation. ——-+ 860-2 He Would Wear a Star. A colored man has made application for appointment as policemen in San Francisco, ‘His name is Calvin Linnett Fowler. and he is a ‘‘six-footer.” He has no political -*¢oull” and says he will sink or swim on the merits of the fact that he ig an Americanorn citizen. The police department of all astern cities have a number of colored men on the force, and the records show that their services are as acceptable as those of men of other nationalities, Fowler is the first colored man to make application in San Francisco,,and the journals of that city seem to regard hia chances for success as favorable, a a Deafness Cannot Be Cured By ‘ocal applications, as they cannot reach the diseased. portion of the ear, There is only one way to cure Deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies, Deafness is caused by—an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube, When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely. closed Deafness is, the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to.its norma} condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. : We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh, Cure. P, Jepson, Relief Bil. > Geo. McCullough, San Juan, S. Noonan, W. U. Tel. Co., B. Thomas, Grass Valley, _. Company met in San Francisco Thursday in third interest in the Utica mine at Angel’s ONE OF OUR MINING MEN. What Mr. Lane Says About the Mayflower Mine, The Post contains the following: The attorneys and litigants in the suit of M. W. Fox against the Hale and Norcross Mining obedience to a notice that the bondsmen on appeal would be compelled to qualify. A bond of $520,000, twice the amount of the judgment renderded, was necessary to tay ¥xecution, pending another appeal from the order of Judge Hebbard entering judgment. W.J. Dingree and W. 8S. Hobart signed the bond and were called upon to qualify before the County Clerk. W. S. Hobart was confined to his home by injuries received in being thrown from his horse a few days ago, and so his appearance was continued by agréement until next Monday. W. J. Dingee, the other surety, failed’ to appear and qualify, and C. D, Lane was substituted, He was sworn and questioned by Attorney Bishop, representing the defendants. He said he resided in California, but own little real estate. : ‘‘What is the extent of your fortune?” asked the attorney. “Oh, I should say I’m worth over $1,000,000.” : “Ts there any doubt about it.” ‘No, none at all.” “You are worth a million over and above your just debts and liabilities and property exempt from execution?” : “Yea, sir.” On cross-examination he said he ownéd a Camp, a half interest in a mine in Alaska with a thirty-stamp mill producing gold at a prcfit, and seven-twentieths of the Mayflower mine at Nevada City, also producing gold, It was worth $250,000 at least, and he believed his interest was worth that. He also owned the Gaston Ridge mine in Nevada county. It cost him about $12,000, and when that is paid off by three other partics he will own but one-third of the mine. He knew of no other mining property that he owned, Then he was questioned as‘to the profits of the Mayflower mine. With four stamps crushing 250 tons of ore a month the net profits had been from $1000 to $2000 a month, He owes $35,000 on his interest in the mine. He valued his interest in the Utica mine at $1,000,000. He was Sne of the original purchasers of the mine and onethird. of the property stood in his name. The Utica Company owns the Utica, Stickle, Madison, Raspberry, Gold Cliff, Taylor, Jackson and Brown mines. He did not know what his deeds called for, but he did know he owned a third of the property and the’records of Calaveras county showed it. He could show an abstract of .title if the County Clerk demanded it. Mr. Curry said he would prefer to have the abstract. Mr. Lane has a mine bonded’ in Arizona for $150,000 which gives ore assayirg about $42 to the ton. He valued it very highly. His mines in Alaska he thought were worth $500,000, and he declared if he owned it all he would not let a man look at it unless he stood ready to pay $1,000,000 for it. Mr. Lane said that Alvinza Hayward and the Hobart estate owned the remaining twothirds of the mine. The debts of the company amounted to very little and were due to the recent fire in the mine, He thought the damage caused by the fire would be less than $100,000. He based his valuation on the mine on what it had been producing, He did,not know what the profits were, but the books would show. They declared divDon?t Dodge. Some oue one has penned the following piece of good advice: Don’t dodge a bicycle rider, either male or! female. Stand still and the rider will get by all right. Posts, tree, stones, etc.,. near dodge, and only beginners ever run into them. If you see a bike coming straight at you, don't dodge; if you do you will confuse the rider. If you stand ‘in the middle of the road,’ or where ever you happen to be, the rider will take care to give you plenty of room, but if you go dodging to get out of the way, the chances are that there will be a collision and you will be the worse hurt of the two. Thereor e, don’t dodge. See Se Miss Shaw Arrives. The San Francisco Post contains an account of the afrival of Kev, Anna H. Shaw in that. city from the East on Tuesday. She was met at the Sixteenth street station by a delegation of ladies, consisting of Mrs. Senator Sargent, President of the State Suffragist League; Mrs, Sarah B. Cooper, Chairman of the Campaign Committee, and Miss Cooper. Arriving on the opposite side of the bay Miss Shaw was escorted to the home of Mrs, Sargent, at 1630 Folsom street. Se ea His Uncle Paid the Fine. = Robert Grase of Grass Valley was discharged from the county jail last night, his uncle, John Truscott, paying his fine, which amounted to $86, one day’s imprisonment being deducted, Crase was sent up for beating an old man named Pierce and also for disturbing the peace. = Attention, Company C. — You are hereby ordered to report at your Armory, in uniform, on Saturday, September 28th, at 8 o’clock, for the purpose of attending target practice. Complaints are being made against the Stat e Board of Examiners that they are not prompt in attending to businese, It is charged by the Sun, edited by W. A. Selkirk, who is supposed to be friendly with Governor Budd— chairman of the Board— that certain bills,’ which were presented last January, have not yet been passed
upon. The delay is not caused by the want of clerical or other assistance, During Governor Irwin’s term of four years, his Private Secretary E, W. Maslin, in addition to his other duties, but without additional salary, performed aH the clerical duties required by the Board of Examiners, and during the four years the coat of stenographic reporting amounted to $167. During Governor Perkins’ term there was occasional extra clerical assistance and somewhat greater cost for stenographic reports, sand dollars, During Governor Waterman’s term his Executive Clerk, Prentis Maslio, did all the work without extra compensa~ tion, and the stenographic reports cost an, aggregate of $328. UnderGovernor Budd's administration neither of the Governor’s Secretaries has anything to do with the Board of Examiners, but they have a secretary of-their-own at a salary of $3,000; an assistant secretary at $1,800; a clerk and stenographer at $1,600, and an expert at $2,000 a year. -Here we have four extra ofticers at a total salary of $8,400, where under Waterman’s administration and Gov. Irwin’s, there was none; & total of $495 for stenographing during their eight years against $6,400 for half that length of time now.
