Parties Agree Upon,
The county central committees od i
candidates of the three parties will by
the end of this week have their plans
perfected for the coming campaign.
They all favor short and speedy fights
on the ground that such fights are not
‘so expensive and wearing as long ones,
bat are just as effective. Sonie of the
candidates who are short. of money and
not over-sanguine of election “think
that two weeks is plenty long enough .
to be in the field, but there are others
who favor starting out October 10th or
11th for the tour of the county. The
general impression seems to be that
most of the time should be spent in,
Grass Valley and this city where the

Last evening about dark as Herbert

Great Battle, ~~
George H. Wilcox, a relation. of Mrs.
#.J. Meacham of this city, and: who left
nila, being a member ofthe band of the
18th Regiment of Minnesota Volunteers. He writes as follows to Mrs,
Meacham under date of August 16th:
We landed on.the 7th about seven
}miles from the city. We camped about
‘Six days. On Saturday morning, the
13th, we had orders to go to the front
and support the famous Astor battery from New York, while the 23d U.
S. regulars supported the Utah battery. The artillery used Hotchkiss
‘Fapid fire guns, the regulars Jorginson ‘rifles and the volunteers Springfield rifles. The engineers had the line
of battle all drawn out. They surveyed every inch of the ground, even
venturing quite close to the enemy’s
intrenchments, which were strongly
fortified. In the meantime our men
went to work making trenches, etc.
The Spanish had sharpshooters on the
lookout and they kept firing on our
men as they worked. When everything
was in readiness for battle Admiral
Dewey sent word to Field Commander
McArthur that they would get down to
business on the 13th of August. The
boys felt greatly honored to think that

We had been told that we could suit
ourselves, but when it came to fighting
we had to carry a rifle with the rest of.
them. Some of the boys did not relish
it—I for one—but never said a word
but took the gun with three hundred
rations, which meant a pretty hard
fight. The company that I was in was
to the front. We left camp early in the
morning and took up our position at
the right flank of the Spanish breastworks in support to the Astor battery,
with the 23d U.S. regulars and Utah
battery at our left, while the remainder
of the regulars brought up the rear.
The first shot was fired by the Utah
battery eight o’clock in the morning,
which was followed by the Astor battery. The Spanish replied from behind
their breastworks. Then Dewey commenced at sea such a roar as I never
heard in my life before. It was deafning. Some of the boys actually trembled and our Colonel and Major both
were scared; but our Captain was as
cool as a dove, also the Captains of the
other companies. The Spanish sent a
torrent of shells and bullets in our
direction, but they were high. Had
they been lower it would have meant
the destruction of the 13th regiment.
The Dons came down a little closer
and poured a rain of shot on the Astor
battery, some of them even reloading
after they were shot down and dying.
It was an awful sight to me, but I felt
like a demon. I wanted revenge. I
trenchments, and we had to cut down
trees and make our own shelter, as we
were in thick brush fighting. They
made it”so hot for us that we were
compelled to retreat a few paces, which
lost to us the Astor battery guns, but
not for long, for we charged on them
with our pistols and recaptured them.
Twenty-four Spaniards were lost in
that charge. Our men steadily advanced, driving them from the trenches.
It was a gallant charge. The boys
commenced cheering and in a short
time we had Old Glory waving over the
Spanish blockhonse, Our Captain was
shot through the shoulder, but he continued to give orders until he fell. A
bullet pierced my shirt at the shoulder, but did no other damage, It
was rare good luck, for bullets were
whistling around us in all directions.
Some of the boys were killed outright
and others wounded. I was the second one of our company over the
ficer’s shoes (a new pair) and a bible,
which I shall take home with me to

were ordered to lay down their arms,

Little Cirl the Victim — She Took a
Few Botties of Hood’s Sarsaparilla and Was Cured. 4
“My little girl became afflicted with
hip disease when she was five years old.
She was confined to her bed and for six or
seven weeks the doctor applied weights to
the affected limb. When she got up she
was not able to walk across the floor. She
had lost all her strength and day by day
she became thinner. One day I happened to receive one of Hood’s Sarsaparilla Calendars and on one of the slips
was a testimonial telling of a cure of a
severe case of hip disease by Hood’s Sarparilla. I decided to give this medicine
to my daughter and when she had,
taken three bottles her appetite was
excellent and she looked quite well and
was very much strengthened. She has
