Several new houses are being built at Re~ lief Hill'this summer, Louis Bushnell and Geo, Penrose are new erecting residences, and more are to follow. The bicyle-bloomer ¢raze has reached -Nevada City, and now it’ will rage with fury. The fever was a long time getting here but the rapid increase of lady-bloomers will make up for lost time, The lawn party at the residence of Thos. 8. Ford; Esq., on Thursday evening, will be a grand affair, Mr. dnd Mis. Ford are among the very best entertainers in this city. Everybody invited to attend. It is a good thing that the planked streets have been done away with, The number of teams that are now going through the public streets would have knocked them into smithereens, if they had been in existence. The hotels here are crowded to their utmost capacity, and all of them are using the vacant outside rooms. The Union, National Exchange and New York Hotel proprietors are talking of enlarging their places next Spring. They will have to do it to meet the demand of increasing patronage, A party consisting of Simon Heironimua, Sr., J. W. Brace and others, left this morning for Bowman Dam, Webber Lake and other places of interest. They go for recreation and to take a rest. : Nevada City is one of the most orderly towns in the State, and it is attributed to the fact that we have officers who are aljways on the look-out for law—breakers, Superior Court. Taylor, the famous mining exwert who recently inspected some of our mines, informed a gentleman the other day that mining was but in its infancy in the Nevada City mining district, That from mow on for years te come the people. would see great prosperity, based upon the hardly touched quartz mines, ‘The Colonel’s head has always been level upon a mining proposition, and we believe his prediction in this case will be veritied, eee A General Holiday. Next Monday will be a legal holiday and, about one-half of the population here talk of going to Sacramento to add to the num-: bers in celebrating Admission Day. It is understood that business will be generally suspended in this city, and all arrangements are being made in that direction, The Transcrirt will help to add to the dullness of the day by suspending publication, so that the editor and the devil can havea day off. os eee ae Special Notice. The. inéreasing activity in gold mining throughout the State is a fitting subject for congratulation among the business community. It augurs well for the future of trade which has been dulled f& years past by the ing men, Expgrience has, however, taught the merchant and manufacturer that reliance upon agriculture and fruit growing alone was not as conducive to prosperty as the plausible reasoning of’ theorists might suggest. Neither of the pursuits gerved to keep the little mountain towns from deser. tion by residents who drew their supplies . . from this city and spent the yold out put from Nature's storehouse here in large amounts, commercial history of this city, and the prayer now is that it may return with the revival of the industry that first brought the State into prominence. : : COMPRESSED AIR oo A Plant'to Be Installed at the Pioneer Mine. A contract has been made by the Pioneer mine of Placer county. for a compressed air plant, similar-to the one now being installed by the North Star Company at Massachusetts Hill, Grass Valley. The power will bo furnished at Towles, about 64 miles’ from the mine, The Colfax Sentinel gives the following description of the plans: , The air will be. compressed in a duplex tandem compound Rix air compressor, by means of a I4-foot Pelton water wheel, directly on the compressor shaft. The. initial pressure will be 100 pounds. The air will then be carried through iron tubing six where it will pass into a reheater and be heated to 350 degrees, From this reheater it will pass into a pneumatic motor, Corliss type, of about 100 H. P., to run the mill, and also be carried about 1000 feet away to operate a system of rock-breakers, and also carried into the mine to operate eight or ten rock drills, eo pees, Jack Miller Tells His Troubles.
