McKinIny's candidacy as the “advance .
agent of prosperity” was de by
the popocratic press, and es aliy by
the Examiner, which mockingly dubbed him the “sdvance agent of national bankruptcy.” In’ view of all
this the article quoted below from the
editorial columns of the Examiner'of
September 20th, makes very interesting: aa on! ion from
the opposition that the Republican

coming under conditions most adverse
and remaining’ through a national ordeal most trying. It is important: that
the voter. should understand that the
only way to perpetuate’ this: prosperity
is, te perpetuate the national policy
that-brought it and: maintained it ander conditions so adverse as to bea

the Republican ticket.
‘The. sound industrial condition of
this country was never more c'early
evidenced than it has been during. the
few weeks that have, elapsed since
peace wasdeclared. The war involved
a direct expense to be met within the
space of a féw weeks, that wou'd have
converted “into a purely consuming
force, economically considered, in’ the
military camps. Uncertainty and unrest were injected into all branches ef!
business; mérchants withhe!d_ their
orders, _manhufacturérs ‘hesitated to
produce until more confident of what
the market would be. The expenses
of the war, and the disturbances incidental to winding-up the war—a' ways’
more influential than those of the ses
tual state of hostilities—have been met
and have caused scarcely a ripple upon the financial sea,
“The reports. of the commeicial
agencies for the past week give ample
cause for encouragement as to the future. The banks furnished an accurate
thermometer to measure the fluctuations of business, and, for the second
week in September, the bank clearances were 22.5 per cent larger than
they were in 1892. Wheat has advanced two cents in price, and exports
for the first half of the month were

the one side or the other. Look at his
record ‘and ‘see if this be not so and
then ask yourself if you want such a
man to be your governor:

During 1876-7 Mr,‘ Maguire was holding office under a Republican administration in the office of the district attorbe? ‘Republican in spntiment.
By 1879 Magiiré was a sandlotter and
& candidate for district attornéy for the
county of Sun Francisco in the Keurney
convention. :
In 1880 he was'e eand’ late for supetior judge in San Frandigseo before the
asndlot convention.
Tn 1882 sandlotism had-spent its force
and Maguire had gotten back into the
Democratic fold and was elected superior judge. Up to this time he had hia
shingle out, but practiced politics instead of law, having few clients, but
plenty of Ward strikers about him.
---In--1886he bolted the -Demoeratic
party and ran for congress°as an independent Democrat as against:the regular Democratic nominee, electing a Republican, but in that year also. organized the independent labor party in
Fan Francisco,:a side issue to be used
for his own advantage..
‘In 1887°Maguire> renouriced’ Démocracy forever and «formerly withdrew
from the party, devoting himsee!f solely
to Henry George afd the single tax.
In 1888 Maguire was a non-partisan
and stumped San: Franciseo for the
non-partisan ticket,
In 1890 Ke ‘forsook the non-partisans

“The export trade was not only large
for the week, but it has shown a most
satisfactory increase throughout the
year. The treasury department has
recently issued a statement showing
the trade with Great Britain. This
shows that while the exports from the
United States to Great Britain have
increased 12 per cent, the imports have
fallen_off 35 per cent. The exports
were about five times as great in value
as the imports. The greatest increases
have been in wheat’ and flour, oats
(which has increased more than fivefold in the past two years), Indian
corn (whieh has nearly doub:ed), fresh
beef, copper and raw cotton. :
‘“These figures aie for the whole coun=
try, but the prosperity of any part
mnst be felt throughoutevery section.
More than this, there is every reason
to expect that the~prosperitv that is
now-ouly beginning to assert itself,and
will go on with increasing force, will
be felt more on. the Pacific Coast than
in any other section of the country.
The trend of development is toward
the west, and the ex)ian sion of cone
merce in the near future will be among
the islands and along the shores of the
Pacific. New York is organizinz companies to establish rezular steamship
lines from thia port to Manila by way
of Hawaii and the Ladrones; alrea:ly
steamship lines are plying between
New York and Australasia. The‘interoceanic canal is a certainty of the near
future; All of these things make for
the development of San Francisco and
the Pacific Coast ports, and promise
well-for the future.”
Over at Watsonville where Maguire
was bronght up, the old settlers tike-the
boy and’ feel sort of protd of him, but
what puzzies them sorely iv: How in
the world did such a good boy, brought
up in such a good community, get his
head_-so full -of bad ideas of government?lt is unaccountable to them except.on
the ground that:he was a freak from
the first, the freakishness not cropping
a blacksmith as when he became a
atriker for office. '
The congressional fight is of surpassing importance in this campaign. Let
California quit her foolishness and send
a solid Republican delega‘ion to Washington and the Golden State will earn
Union. Sending freaks to congress
as a freak state, an aspect not at all
conducive to immigration or the investment of capital in productive enterprises. ‘
The Republican state ticket is good
either way you take it, from. the top
down or from the bottom up. There
are no freaks on that ticket. They
stand for good administration and good
government. Vote it. :

What stability of character can such
amanhave? And of what use is an
unstable man to any people? Surely
he is not fitted tobe trusted with executive duties of a great state. He is
an unstable equilibtiam, a reed shaking in the wind.

It has been the pride-of Ang'o-Saxon

which a ‘covert warfare is being waged,

would be sought tobe done covertly
