The Republican hauls Truckee over Geos Logp. or GRas6 VALLEY ‘
. . a ran a ‘or re mination as
the coals vigorously for its badness of . sheriff, subject to the deciaion of ‘the Reconduct. That paper says: “‘To tell
the honest truth, Truckee deserves all,
or nearly all, the opprobriums which
have been cast upon it, and citizens
when asked to express their sentiments of our village, will say almost
unanimously: “This is a bh——of a
town.” The worst elements of society
congregate here and feel perfectly at
home. Toughs, thugs, pimps, tramps,
tin-horn gamblers, prostitutes, idlers,
vagabonds, opium fiends, petty larceny thieves and vagrants generally
make themselves conspicuous and
seem to thrive. Truckee with its pep
ulation of 1,500 furnishes more crimes
and criminals twice over than the rest

20,000. Why isthis? The Republican ted tosay it was because it was
a railroad.town. Bosh! There are
other towns on the railroad and they
are nice orderly towns. Reno enjoys
@ good name and it “is near the State
line and is twice as large and is on
the railroad. Other railroad towns
are nice good towns. There is Auburn
and Winnemucca and Elko. The railroad doesn’t make the town bad.
The simple reason that Truckee is
bad is because it is permitted to yo
bad. Halfthe crimes committed here
are winked at. Matters punished as
crimes elsewhere, are looked upon as
gport bere. A man can get drunk
‘and raise hades and some really good
citizen will carelessly say, ‘Oh, it’s
only so.and so drunk again.’ ”’
