Here goes, and it’s one on the Nugget. Twice we ran a straw ballot blank on our front page inviting the good people of Nevada ‘City to express their sentiment regarding the transfer of the municipal swimming pool fund to water system repairs. Well, it comes hard; but the truth must out. We received: just six votes. Five of them were in favor of turning the pool fund over to the city for water system rénovation, and one was against it. ae: = If straws show which way the wind blows this particular straw show that the swimming. pool fund is about to be converted to making the city safe in its water supply. THE EDITORIAL CIRCUIT RIDER The Akron disaster promises to sound the death knell for this type of airship, as far as the United States is concerned, in the belief of California editors. Is it worth while, they inquire, to continue experimenting with these cumbersome airships in view of the navy discouraging experiences, not only in this country, but abroad, each. bringing appalling loss of life? «Development of the type since the war has not been encouraging, said the Orange Daily News. “It has never been proven that the dirigible can do anything which the airplanes can not do more effectively and more cheaply. The cost of the dirigible has been out of all proportion to its effectiveness and the danger to its crews can scarcely be justified.” “In any event it will be most discouraging to the navy department,” remarked the Santa Barbara Morning Press, “for it was thought that the Akron was the last word in lighter-than-air craft construction, and that the remarkable advantages of the Graf Zeppelin, which was not so large or so modern as the Akron, had demonstrated the usefulness and comparative safety of this type of ship.” ‘Confidence will not easily be restored in the value and usefulness of these ships, said the Stockton Record, adding: “The American people will remember, in addition to the Akron tragedy, the fate of the Shenandoah when struck by The Quest A restless breeze goes straying Across the landseape fair, It whispers in the tree tops, It searches here and there It rustles thru the grasses, And flies across the fen, It cannot rest untill it finds 3 The little homes of men. And When at length it finds one, “It breaths a soft, low song, And quickly thru the portal, It slips and glides along; With touch of fairy fingers It stirs each open door, It danees in the sunlight. That lies upon th efloor. A while it seems to listen, Then with a whispering sigh, It joins its eerie laughter With mother’s lullaby; And rising, oh so gently In little wiffs and swirls, Tt toys for just a moment With baby’s golden curls. TY Our eager thoughts go straying Across the shining wortd, They fly from mountains hoary. To shores: with white waves pearled; They seek the caves of ocean, They walk among the stars, * But rest, and peace, and love they fin Behind Home’s window bars. = A. MERRIAM CONNER. WEEKLY . . COMMENT . Pines owromeere CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN cent of his first months salary to the treasury thus taking some of his own drastic economy medicine and in his case that amounted to about $930.00, which is setting a good example. There ‘are many men who are considered leaders in this country who are supporting the new Democratic administration with might and main. There are other men, not The President remitted 18 pe, eonsidered leaders, who are seriously hampering the forward march to economic recovery by creating dissatisfaction with their insidious attacks on Roosevelt and the sincere men and women who are his aidés. They are mere disturbers and their words should not carry any weight. Italy is preparing to. send some 3.2 wine to this country. Well maybe we can exchange some good 3.2 beer for some of it. By the way that 3.2 is not al all bad (so some of my friends say). Dunn and Bradstreet “financial agencies, report a quickening in’ display advertising ‘and merchants throughout the country report a very encouraging response to the increase in space used. Of course I am willing to acknowledge that there are inopportune times to advertise, but right now in my opinion is a time for judicious use of advertising. Especially is this true in seasonable merchandise. It is certainly getting harder and harder for hoarders in this country. Just think one may be fined 1 $10,000 or spend 10 years in jail. Right here my wife butts in with this cruel remark, ‘“‘Well thank goodness we have no worries that way.” A cartoon in the metropolitan press by Winsor Mckay together with an editorial on dictators, certainly presents a sad picture of humanity grovelling among the ruins of his self created civilization. One must read to the end of that editorial. The story is told in a climactic finish with sane prophecy as to the ultimate outcome of the whole thing, which according to Mr. McKay will be a bigger and better civilization based on truth, equality and intelectuality, instead of greed, avarice and dollar worship. Let’s ‘drink a toast to that in our our 3.2 brew. The Soviet Republic of Russia have lister in defense department one soldiers come home from. the next war they will be tired and hungry and the pigeons can be made into one gigantic pigeon stew. Every body can have a good helping of the stew though it is doubtful whether a million pigeons would satisfy even mementarily the appetite of a million Russian soldiers. : NOW AGAIN, LEST WE FORGET, TELL THE WORLD THAT NEVADA CITY IS THE GATEWAY TO THE MOUNTAIN PLAYGROUNDS. Alleghany and Forest Road is Still Closed The road between Alleghany and Forest is not open yet, the mail still going up by way of Foote’s road via North Columbia. At one time this winter there were between 10 and 12 feet of snow in some places on the road, this being known as the ridge road ‘to Alleghany, 0. lightning and plunged to earth with the loss of 14 lives. They may remember that all told over 270 men have met death in non-combatant mishaps to dirigibles of the United States, Great Britian, France, Germany and Italy since 1913. Our most ardent militarists have not been able to build up a convincing case for these great gas bags costing millions of dollars and providing an almost certain entry into a suicide club for those who man them.” Commenting on the huge loss in lives and money caused by dirigible disasters, the Berkeley Gazette said: “Today the American people are asking: “Does it pay?’ Tomorrow, and in the days to follow, they will have more to say on what seems to many to be futile experimenting with these unwieldly monsters of the air. In the meantime the sympathy of the nation goes out to the survivors of -the gallant men who fought so valiantly for their lives during the terrifying final moments before the Akron plunged to its death.” PATRONIZE NUGGET ADVERTISERS -— IT PAYS!
