By CLAYTON RAND From a distance this sit-downer business looks silly. Some of us in the country can’t even comprehend it. _A few years ago men walked the streets in Detroit in rags. Thousands of them sought jobs, stood in line at soup kitchens or sat around on benches in public parks. Now they sit down on the job they have, and the contagion of it spreads over the country like the jig-saw craze or the influenza. I wonder what would happen to these workmen if people over the country sat down on the idea of buying any cars? “As far as I am concerned . wish every. fellow that sat down on the job got boils. [dleness never cured a country’s economic ills and never will. Killed By a Sentence . They'd not be having budget trouble at Sacramento, or any other trouble to speak of, if all the lawmakers employed the terse and sterling logic with which a committee chairman killed a tax bill in the assembly. the other day. es “We don’t need new taxes,” he said, “‘so why bother with these tax bills>’’ That’s all there was to it. The bill; proposing to sneak 50 million dollars out of the taxpayers’ purse indirectly, was immediately tabled. It was finished, washed up — killed by a sentence. And a classic sentence it was. Taxes have one and only one purpose, and that is to raise revenue. There is enough revenue in sight, ‘‘so why bother with these tax bills?” The one cardinal principle of taxation, and the public interest, were the only things to be considered here, and the deathdealing sentence took both into account. — Too often, there are other considerations. Too often, on an indirect tax proposal, the lawmaker’s first Rapumee is, “What group sponsors it? The public won't know it’s paying —what group does the tax hit directly? Revenue? Bosh! Whichgroup can muster the most votes?’’ And then there's the cling through confused complication and tortured deviousness, after which sound principles and the public good may or may not triumph. Every tax bill at this session can be slapped down with the death-dealing logic of a single sentence. And a sentence could be coined for legislators to use on all othher occasions, now and for all time., ‘We're here to do the public bidding,” it would say, “so why bother with all these pressure groups ?’’—Contributed. vestigation of an investigation. Now if they'll just investigate the investigators who are investigating the investigation, they'll be getting somewhere. @ The Coronation . i Lord Marley, the British peer now visiting California, advises staying away from the much-ballyhooed and_ long awaited coronation of King George VI, “because . don’t want to see my American friends exploited.” This, from a Britisher, is sheer sacrilege. That all the regal pageantry could be mere window-dressing for tawdry tion of centuries could be just a big show run for profit— why, the very thought is appalling. Appalling—yes, definitely, as most Britishers would say. Yet the idea will startle few Americans. We're wise to ‘the British way of doing the practical thing under the guise of “tradition” and “form” and other ancient abracadabra. And besides, what's wrong with a show for profit? In America we hold world fairs and frankly admit that the underlying purpose is commercial—with a lot of fun on the side. Actually, however, profit taking is only a close second among the practical reosans for the lavish pomp and ceremony of the coronation. First and above all is a reason only indirectly commercial, that.of drammatizing royalty and keeping the crown a symbol of the unity of all peoples of the British Empire. Holding the empire together is vital to the economic survival of England, to her commerce and thus, of “course, to her profit-taking: ~ “But Lord Marley's advice won't frighten away many Americans. A little exploiting of those who have enough mon_ey to go won't matter much. Americans love a big show, a d they go expecting to be fleeced, anwway. ye ay : The studio that satisfies. .
