SACRAMENTO, April 29. — California should be on a cash

$8,000,000 had been slashed from
the recommendations of Governor
Frank F. Merriam.
The cut in budget was attacked
by the minority Republican group of
assemblymen as ‘‘buck passing,”’ the
G. O. P. charging the difference will
be made up in special appropriation
bills.
Most of the reduction of Governor
Merriam’s recommendations was aecomplished. by reducing the: relief
fond, and transferring” to this fund
$7,250,000 for construction and repair of state institutions and colin the
general fund.
President Roosevelt’s message to
eongress urging economy will have
no effect on his earlier. recommendations of a $15,000,000 appropriation for the Central Valley Water

in the budget.
Sacramento’s proposed 30-foot
river channel and deep sea port took
a step forward last. week when it
was approved by the sub-committee
of the National Rivers and Harbors
Congress. Endorsement by army engineers is the next step in the pro@ram to secure the channel. W. G.

opening of the gigantic structure on
May 27. M. Amine Youssef, royal
Egyptian minister to. the United
Statés was a visitor in Sacramento
last week. He was entertained by the
of directors of the Chamber
of Commerce and was, speaker at a
special session of the state legislature.
Governor Merriam last week
signed bills requiring shutdown of
liquor servicé between 2 a. m. and
6 a. m: and defining fluid milk, fluid
cream and retail stores in marketing agreements. Schedules based on
a 50 cent toll for. passenger automobiles on the Golden Gate bridge
have been announced. A final check
up by the state board of equalization revealed actual income to the
state from the three per cent sales
tax during 1936 was $81,478,533.05.
The assembly refused to withdraw
the tabled anti-criminal ~ syndicalism bill from committee by a vote

GOLD LAKE ROAD AIM
OF SIERRA CO. BOARD
The Gold Lake road project was
taken up at the last meeting of the
Sierra county board of supervisors
and it was reported that the possibilities for the Gold Lake road project
going forward are very good. Mr.
Lombardi, supervisor, reported that
the electric company, which owns
much land in the section, .is willing
to give ground for an 80 foot roadway and the U. S. bureau of public
roads will assist in the financial end.
The electric company did not care to
concede some land on the lake shore,
as some time or other, they anticipate the constuction bot a power
plant there, and wish the road to cut
out around the proposed site. The
work will be‘delayed some because
surveyors cannot get in to locate the
road because of snow in the high
mountains. Mr. Lombardi believes
the job will be done and another
great beauty spot in the.county opened to sightseers and nature lovers.
Roads is the one important thing
that Sierra county needs to permit
tourists and sightseers to come in
and see the wonders of the section.
The persistent efforts for’ these improvements, put forth for many
months, it now appears, are -beginning to bear fruit.
Over 600,000 are in Northern California,
To date only a small. portion of
the persons entitled to file claims
have made. application. However, it
is stimated that in the United States
there will be a thousand cases a day
entitled o apply for lump-sum benefits. In California it is estimated this
number will amount to about 1,500
per month, and in the bay region
over 400 cases per month will be entitled to apply for lump-sum payments. About one-third of these payments will go to persons who have
reached age 65, and the balance to
the estates of workers who have died
since January 1, 1937. At tthis early
date the individual claims will not
be large, as the amount due is 3 1-2
per cent of the wages earned in covered employments since Januuary 1,
1937, but there will be a contiual increase in their value as the amount
of wages earned since January I,
1937 grows larger.

FILTER PLANISPROPOSED FOR

H. M. Leete, park board member,
Herbert Hallet,

Councilman Frank Davies,
street superintenddrove to Sacramento Saturday to examine Sacramento’s method of filtering water, with a view to adopting:
some plan for filtering the water
in’ the municipal swimming pool. .
Owing to the fact the city water
supply carries a_ little sediment.
even when it appears the clearest,
the park board has’ for sometime
been studying methods of. clearing
the water so that the life guard at
the pool would be enabled to see the
bottom of the pool in its deepest
part at any time.
The board has proposed and the
city council is now considering a
method of using the water of Little
Deer Creek at the pool, leading i+
by ditch and pipe to a sump near the
present lily pond, and then lifting
by a centrifugal pump to the filters,
to be constructed above the «pool,
running from the filters into the
pool by gravity. It would also be an
easy matter to turn the present city
