not to the fact that the“boot black was
unable to complete his contract on Dan
Buckley’s boots until 10 o’clock.

Hon, Edwin C. Burleigh, the Republican candidate for Governor of
Maine, is one of the foremost lawyers
of. the State, and a gentleman of exalted character, whose influence has
always been employed on the side of
pure politics and cleanly administration. His nomination for the Govern.
orship was the outcome of a popular
and. if any. Republican can carry the
State, he is undoubtedly the man.
He is descended from one of those
English families which long: ago settled inthe North of Ireland, intermarried with the Scotch settlers and thus
became merged in the general cluss
known as Scotch-Irish. When the
British. Parliament imposed unjust redemand_ which eould—not—be_resisted, . business of the evening had been
transacted, the hall was thrown open
anda limited number of people not
belonging to'the order were admitted.
There wasa pleasing program of recitations by Misses Lou Maltman,
Mabel Bradley, Edith Edwards, Lillie
Keenan, Alice Caldwell and Mattie
Dreyfus-. Miss Mthnie Brand gave
an instrumental -sclo, The young
ladies won much applause. Sandwiches, cake, ice cream, confectionery
and other refreshments were served.
The evening's entertainment, considering the fact that it. was arranged
on but afew hours’ notice, was successful.
The Legion of Honor as an insurance order presents special advantages. 1t has so far paid out over
twelve iillions of dollars and has
relieved 3,800 families. A person 28
years of age becomes a member, and
pays twenty-four assessments per annum, the security costs only $9.60 for
$1,000. If said member lives and continues his membership until he is
sixty-eight years of age, he will have
paid but $384.00, and ‘his beneficiaries
will receive $1,000. A member of 49
years of age will pay for $1,000 security (on the basis of twenty-four assessments per annum) ‘only $20.16,
and should he die at the age of 70, his
security will have cost but $403.20.

Condon came up on Thursday evening’s train and went to Washington

in the right hip, a. painful bruise on
the back and several minor bruises.
He and another man were ascending
the incline on a chain connecting a car
and a truck which were being hoisted.
They had come up to within a foot or
two of the landing when the engineer
observed that the hoisting cable was
running off one of the spools. He immediately stopped the machinery.
One of the men apprehending danger
spring from the chain, but Waters, who
was a new hand, retained his position
and shouted to the engineer to hoist
away. Just then the cable went off
the spool, leaving fifty feet of slack in
the cable. The truck and car. shot
down the incline like a flash. When
the cablo tightened at the depth of
fifty feet it held the track, buat the
chain connecting it with the car
anapped and the car went on down.
Waters rolled along down after the
car, finally coming to a stop at a depth
of about one hundred feet. When
found he was crushed up on one side
of the incline and apparently dying.
‘He was placed upon-a board, carried
to the surface, then takea to the home
of his parents on Gold Flat where Dr.

“A dispatch received Saturday forenoon from Boston announced the
death in that city, at seven o’clock
Saturday morning, of Mr. George R.
Lancaster, of this city, who, with his
wife, had been passing about two
weeks in that city. They Were intending to return home on Friday,
but on that day he was stricken with
apoplexy and died as above stated.
Mr. Lancaster had been in feeble
health for some time, but his death,
coming as it did, was sudden and unexpected, and has thrown gloom over
a large circle of friends. Mr. Fred G.

father’s condition Friday noon and
teached Boston that evening, and the

Red Men’s Entertainment.
About twenty members of Weimer
Tribe of Red Men came up from Grass
Valley Thursday evening to pay a
fraternal visit to their brethren of
Wyoming [ribe. At the meeting that
was held the question of the proposed
entertainment under the auspices of
the order was considered, and the
proposition to have a picnic at Glenbrook Park was abanduned. There
will instead be given at Armory Hall on
Monday evening, September 10th, a
musical and literary entertainment to
be followed by a ball. The committee
to-have full charge of the preparations
consists of E. W. Roberts, Geo. Gill
and Richard Gluyas of Weimer Tribe,
many ‘thousands more, emigrated to
New England, and in 1880 Col. Moses
Burleigh, grandfather of the subject
of this sketch, moved from New
Hampshire to Linneus, Aroostook
county, Maine, where his son and
grandson were born. Hon. Parker P.
Burleigh, father of Edwin, has been a
prominent citizen, representing his
town in both branches of the Legislature, and serving as land agent, and
is still a vigorous man at 76. Edwin
Chick Burleigh was born in Linneus,
November 27th, 1843, and is. consequently in the very prime of life. His
youth was spent on a farm in the
backwoods of Maine, and after having
received a good academic education
of the temerance laws of the State.
In 1864 he volunteered, but as he had

A Foothill Farm.
J. H, Nile’s fruit farm in Rough and
Ready township, about a milé from
Pet Hill ina northerly direction, is
one of the most productive properties
in the county, and owes its reputation
to the careful and intelligent manner
in which it is cultivated as well as to
the salubrity of climate and richness
of soil in that part of the county. A
few instances of the capability, of the
place will be interesting. From one
acre, 45 bushles of wheat was recently
harvested. Ten acres yielded 50 tons
of hay, a large field of clover giving three cuttings to the season. $200
worth of tomatoes have been grown on
a quarter acre of land. This year Mr.
Nile has half an acre of them planted.
He has this season put out 500 peach
trees, 50 orange and lemon trees and a
mae this city his home ever since.
Since 1859 he has been engaged in the
lumber business and is a member of
the firm of M. L.& D. Marsh. He
bas served one term as County Supervisor, and has long been chairman
of the City Board of Education. He
is aluv one of the Directors of the 17th
Agricultural District Axsociation. He
is a first-class citizen and thoroughly
competent for the position he aims at.
Praise Service Tomorrow.
At Trinity Church tomorrow evening a praise service will be given.
Selections from ‘The Creation” by
Haydn will be sung by the choir
which will be assisted by the best
musical talent in Nevada City. Mr.
and Mrs: Hawkins, vocalists from San
Francisco, will take part in the
service. Rey. A. b. Spaight will lecture on ‘‘Genesis and Geology.’”” He
will give a description of the earth

Ferd. Montgomery's Condition.
Tidings of Thursday : Ferd. P. Montgomery and Miss Sallie Montgomery
came up from Sacramento last evening
and remained in this city over night.
This morning they went on to their
home in Penn -Valley. Mr. Montgomery’s condition is about the same
as when he left here and he is not in
immediate danger of death. Complications of an optical affliction and very.
severe bronchial troubles are the principal ailments.
