a —~ Ayes * 4—Nevada City, California, Friday, December 8, 1950 on NUGGET CHIEF JACKSON ASKS CAUTIOUS DRIVING IN HOLIDAY SEASON: An appeal for caution by motorists to help cut the December traffic toll was coupled today by J. J. Jackson, Chief of Police, with announcement that forces of law enforcement will be alert to make Nevada City streets as ‘safe as, possible for pedestrian and driver. ‘ Jackson pointed out the National Safety Council figures show last December’s traffie accident toll, on a nationwide basis was 150 deaths greater than October’s, the second most deadly month, and 430 deaths greater than July’s, the month of heaviest highway traffic: in terms of miles driven. “A lot. of factors enter into a traffic accident,” said .Jackson, “but December’s unnatural death record is significant in that it coincides with the weather, wet and slippery streets and the obscuring of drivers’ vision because of rain, fog and clouded wind shields, fx » “It is the belief of the traffic division that the physical, factors found in winter driving tends to make it doubly dangerous for the driver who refuses to acknowledge the need for greater caution, less speed ard more defensive driving: “While a lucky driver may get away with all sirts of reckless and unthinking driving during the rest of the year, the physical factors present in winter driving are. frequently the stumbling blocks which spell his downfall.” Jackson issued the following rules for driving during the Christmas shopping rush and the holiday season: Double your caution. Drive as though the unexpected will happen. Lower your speed. This is necessary in view of the dangers present on wet and slippery streets and the increased stopping distances arising from such conditions.. . Always maintain: your brakes, windshield wiper blades and lights in the best possible con. dition: About one out of every five fatal acidents in 1949 was attributed to some form of vision obscurement. : ‘CHRISTMAS FIRES INJURE CHILDREN Some American children may spend this Christmas in hospitals, suffering from painful and disfiguring. purns. That is a warning of the Na-. tional Board of Fire Underwriters, which points out that th« Christmas season is one of th: most dangerous in the year from the standpoint of fires. Use of flammable corations, careless smoking by adults near Christmas trees, and selection ot . toys which can cause injury are among the special hazards in‘ the home at Christmas time, the National Board states. The organization offered this check list for parents, ‘to reduce the hazard to children during the Christmas holidays: 1, Do not dress children? in ‘flimsy, flammable costumes. 2: Do not use lighted candles at Christmas. Use electric lights instead. 3. When choosing new Christmas lights, look for marking which indicates listing by Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc. 4, Do not use cotton or paper decorations on your tree unless they are flame-proofed. 5. Do not buy toys using gasoline, kerosene, or other flammable fluids. Be very careful in selecting toy chemical sets. 7. Remove all wrappings from the house soon after presents are opened.
