Portland’s new hospital, built in order to furnish'a field of practice for the medical school of Williamette University, is completed. John Robinson, the veteran .showman, died at his home in Cincinati on Saturday. There isa deficiency of about §¢3,500,000 in the Burlington Railroad Company's treasury. = oy During an electric storm in New York on Saturday the lightning set fire to a telegraph office. a Senator Voorhees opened the Democratic campaign in Indiana at Terre Haute on Saturday-evening. The porter of a Union Pacific sleeping-car was shot and killed by an insatie passenger in Wyoming. Acan of powder exploded in .the arms of Antonio Devitla at Squantuck, Conn., killing him instantly. The product of the Comstock mines for the past quarter was largely in excess of that of the preceding quarter. A colored woman of Otlando, Fla., was promptly cured of rattlesnake poison by the application ‘of a mad:_gtone to the wound. Blackstone, a thriving little town of 1,500 inhabitants in Virginia, was completely destrayed by fire on Saturday. Ten stores and many dwellings were burned. Loss, $35,000. Charles Perkins, alias Watson, who. killed seven mules and one horse belonging to Mrs. Moore, in the Choctaw nation, ten days ago, shot and killed two United States States marshals and one citizen on Saturday in resisting arrest. Reports of the terrible ravages of grasshoppers in the surrounding districtsare daily reaching Ottawa. A naturalist who visited the infested district has estimated there were on each square mile of territory upward of 100,000,000 grasskoppers. Mrs. Mary Sheridan, the wife of John Sheridan, who was killed by a street car in Los Angeles, died of heart disease the next morning. When viewing the body of Sheridan she acted like one demented,and complaining of intense pain in her heart, was taken toher home, where she gradually grew worse until she expired.
