nets 2 NEVADA CITY NUGCET MONDAY, JANUARY 29, 1940. Nevada City Nugget 305 Broad Street. Phone 36. : : Legal Newspaper, as defined by: statute. Printed and Published z at Nevada City. 2 = ee Editor and Publisher Published Semi-Weekly, Monday and Friday at Nevada City. California, and entered as mail matter of the second class in the postoffice at Nevada City. under Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. , SUBSCRIPTION RATES One year (In Advance) ......:.2.-.--.--.-----$2.50 yd > ra a. f (: New Army of Taxeaters Pa With taxes at an all time high and the Legislature in special session thinking up new ones, a new army of taxeaters is bobbing up-in-state departments and bureaus. They are called Deputy Administrators. How many there are to be is not specified. The estimate runs as high as 200. The pay is around $400 a month for most of them. When the present administration took over, it found all the good jobs, civil service and term appointment, filled by the outgoing regime. Something had to be done for the camp fol? lowers. The Deputy Administrator is the answer and itsis likely to cost the taxpayers another $2,000,000 or so per year. Each Deputy Administrator means more stenographers, more clerks, more state automobiles, more gas, oil and tires and more expense accounts as the Deputy Administrators go about on their important and interesting tours to see how things are’ getting along. Where the money is coming from apparently is not worrying the administration.” Judicious distribution of jobs no doubt will spur a spending-minded Legislature to find various ways and means. The department and bureau heads to whom the Deputy Administrators are assigned do not want or need them. In fact, they regard them as much as Russian Army officers look on the political commissars sent to keep an eye on their political regularity. Taxpayers having a tough time to buy their own tires and pay their own expenses may justly get hot under the collar about the new load being put on them, instead of economies to lighten the pack. Their only recourse is to warn their legislators that the extravagance of government has got to stop, or there will be some new faces in Sacramento.—Contributed. me an Not Even A Poorhouse h The Governor's message to the Legislature is in tune with the current political philosophy of extravagance. Nowhere in the-chart provided for the special session, is ' there any suggestion of possible economies. Instead it reaches in every direction for every penny that taxing hands can be laid upon.\ Every avenue of revenue that imagination can suggest is explored. The proposed raid is so terrifying that the taxpayers are expected to accept any compromise with gratitude. The message is the governor's, but it is typical of national, state and municipal tax messages everywhere. Any suggestion of economy is sternly rebuked as anti-social. The existing political philosophy is that every penny of wealth in the country should be seized and dissipated as fast as possible. Spending has become the means of getting and keeping political power. Tax raid that a few years ago would have brought _Prompt punishment now are endured with docility that invites new aggression. a The people must serve notice on their legislators that the spending has got to stop. They must be deaf to the specious _. ,Yeasoning that excuses the spending. Unless they do, this will become a nation ready to go over thé hill to the poorhouse, but with none to go to.—Contributed. — , Isms “Are Wasms { The conviction of Communist Earl Browder in Federal Court in New York, with a sentence of four years and $2,000 fine, is a warning to alien-inspired hellraisers that public patience is getting worn out. : Browder was not convicted of communism, but of fraud in getting passports to use in his communist activity trips to Moscow. The squawk about persecution set up by pinks and punks is nonsense. Admittedly American-born, Browder probably would -not have been prosecuted if the Dies Committee had not turned up. The same is true of German-born Bund Leader Kuhn, now in Sing Sing for stealing money. If these persons, Browder and Kuhn, had not made themselves public nuisances, they would not have attracted attention from the Dies Committee. The important thing is, they got fair trials. And the encourag‘ing thing is that radical activity is not a license for crime, as so many of its devotees seem to think it is. : Citizens who supposed that what they earned belonged to them, and struggled to carry on and produce, pay taxes, _ educate their children and keep body and soul together, have been harried by investigations that bedevilled them ‘by boiling over when, like village Hampdens, they resisted the tyrants who menaced their little fields. They can take some satisfaction from the fact that the investigating committee, with cf 107 mi streee Nevada County Photo Center PHONE 67 Portraits, Commercial Photography, cet 8 Hour Kodak Finishing, Old Copies, ‘DProroenapree Enlarging and Framing, sat ’Kodaks and Photo Supplies, Movie Cameras and Films THE POCKETBOOK CAMPTONVILLE MASONS INSTALL OFFICERS CAMPTONVILLE, Jan. 29.—Installation of officers was held at a of KNOWLEDGE ros THE.
