Mrs. Lester & CRAWFORD’S new advertisement will be ,read with dee, in-erest by all ages ana classes of peuple throughout the community. ‘his firm not only offers unprecedentedly low’ bargains in all kinds of goods kept by * them, but make the liberal proposition to present every little girl buying ten cents or more worth of goods between now and New Year; with a doll’s hat. — > Disraicr Arrorney Lone leaves today for San Francisco and other points below. He nopes by the trip to regain his health which has been poor oflate. During his absence, which will probably extend over this month, E. H. Gaylord, ex-District Attorney, will attend to Mr. Long’s official duties, Nick Vincent, who was released irom the county jail two weeks ago alter serving w term fo drunkenness, was yesterday returned to that institution to spend ten days more, Justice Sowden having sentenced him on the same grounds that have led to his ‘frequent incarceration heretofore. A portion of the old and dilapidated sidewalk on Boulder street below Park Avenue bas been replaced by anew and substantial one. More of the si.ewalks on ‘that street require attention, for some of them are extremely rickety. — aan Exper James Logan, of _the Christian Church, will occupy the pulpit of the Congregational Church this morning and tonight. Thomas, the one-armed man brought to the county seat to be examined on a charge of insanity has been by the authorities pronounced a fit candidate for the asylum and will be taken to Stockton. He has a wife and son living at Birchvitle where he has been for some time engaged in keeping saloon. His physical health is bad. Fora few weeks he has been suffering from an attack of paralysis which affected a portion of one side. He imagines ._ his relatives are trying to kill him by injecting poison into his arm. Thomas lost one of his arms ag the result of a bite inflicted upon his hand three or four. years ago by Henry Powell during a quarrel Letween the two men, in which Thomas was proven in Court to be the aggressor. Blood-poisoning set in shortly after he was bitten, necessitating amputation. San Juan People in Luck. — ‘At the earnest solicitation of the citizens on the Ridge and in the vicinity of San Juan, Brand Brothers have made arrangements to open a branch store at San Juan for one week, commencing Dec. 14, with a large stock of holiday goods embracing ali the important lines carried in their large store at Nevada City. Their Management and Cendition —Found to be Highly Satisfactery. How easy it is to say that our. public schoola are the pride and boast of the city. Yet how few ofour citizens ever see the interior of those manufactories oi mind and morals where are molded, in so large a degree, the characters of those whose proper training is the greatest responsibility resting upon the individual _parent, and the most sacred pubiic trust, ‘This neglect ot persona: visitation, we beileve, is not due to apathy or indifference, but rather that the parents, like this scribe, have rested ina teeling of conhdence that the trustees and teachers to whom we have deiegateu this great responsibility, are competent and.-trustworthy to produce the highest and best results with the means so liberally provided by the taxpayers. One may be prepared to be pleased with the state,of this city’s scnools, but a burried visit to the different departments. will nevertheless,be a very agreeable. gurprise. We recommend the experiment to all who should be interested in public education. ©" Beyinning with the. lower 8th grade you will find Miss West presiding overa room full of. the prettiest'and brightest little tots you ever saw—as still as mice and as attentive as weasles, every one incheeriul and active sympathy with theirteacher. They hang upon every look and gestiire and obey every low spoken direction (there are no commands) with ove happy impulse. ‘These little ones are being introduced to the reading, writing, drawing, singing, spelling and number exercises in such a way that t.ey, find them delightful acquaintances. In the afternoon Miss West has a new recruit, so that she teaches over 100 different pupils each day. In Mrs, White’s room we finda mixed class of 7th and 8th grade pupils. ‘The Principal says this is the hardest class in the department to handle, and yet they all seem wide-awake and are very expert in their recitations. In the Lincoln building the three reoms taught by the Misses Clark, McKeon and Hook are _in the most perfect state of discipline. The movement in lines, all stepping to the count or to the time of a marching song, is a valuable species of training, and it passes the pupils in and out of the crowded rooms and halls with dispatch and without the least confusion. In fact, the discipline throughout all the departments could hardly be improved; yet there is no appearance of rigidity or embarrassing constraint; but on the contrary, the order seems cheerful and spontaneous. One would judge there was littletime for mischief, as the-pupils, seem to think it is necessary to put inevery moment in the pursuit of the monthly percentage in scholarship. The secret of this anxiety seems to be a good degree of certainty that if they are below par they will be promptly returned to a grade where the work is easier. The teachers should be sustained in this strict grading, as itis the only course that will insure thoroughness and make the High School diplomas-have a value. The teachers alone . are in a position to judge of the proficiency and ofthe ability of the pupil to do the work. In the higher de partments there are noexceptions to the’ excellent order and earnest work. The rooms are all very full and the teachers are instructing an average of about 60 pupils each. The High School is certainly a great credit to the city. Few any towns ‘in the State can boast of so large a High. School in proportion'to the number of inhabitants: There is no greater folly than for young men and maidens to rush away into the active duties of life with half .a preparation. It speaks well for our people that they are determined to make the most of these splendid opportunities. The 97 pupils enrolled are very prompt in attendance and are doing excellent Work, The High School teachers, like those in’the other departments, seem well adapted to their special grades, and it is safe to say that the schools have never been in better condition than they are at present, under the intelligent and experienced principalship of Prof, Hill. The people have complained of the frequent changes oi teachers. Why is not this a good time to adopt the civil service rule of retaining faithful and competent servants? . Brand Brothers, oe ta YE HARD TIMES. — A Successful Novelty in the Party Line, When after much discussion and deliberation the ladies of Trinity Sewing Society came to the conclusion that they might. realize a moderate sum of money for the benefit of the Episcopal Church by departing from the time-worn social ruts, and giving a new-style and fresh entertainment “in the way of a Hard Times Party, they ielt as though they were explorers emburking upon a sea Of experiment ‘which might prove a veritable slough of financial disaster. ‘They determined that there should not be a failure through any tault of theirs, and straightway went to work. The result on #riday evening well revaid them ior the efforts they made, Hunt's Hail contained one of the largest assemblages of people that éver congregated there on such an Occasion. Judging from thé tickets sold and-the money derived—trom admission to the gallery, there must have been upward of 500 persons there, including 4 number of Grass Valleyans. ‘The Nevada City folks apptopriately came afoot, with the notable exception ofan eminent legal gentieman’s wife and a young lady frieid who were ‘‘dared’’ by the e. 1. g. to ride irom the family residence to the Hall in John Grimes’ dumpcart, and proved their nerve and spirit of independence much to the amusement of the crowds of people along the streets. whom they and the vehicle passed while en route. Most of the lady dancers were neatly attired in costumes of common material, while the gentlemen as a rule wore their every-day suits. Some of the sterner sex went still further in carrying out .the idea of hard times, wearing overalls and coloredshirts. The programmes were of manilla wrapping paper printed by the copying process from an original draught made on_a typewriter. On the first page was the quotation, ‘‘Poyerty Snatches the Reins Outof the Hands of Piety,’’ the fourth page bearing the names of the floor director (J. M. Hadley) and the various committees of young. ladies and gentleman. ‘The ‘‘tassel’’ was a piece of ordinary cotton twine, and in place of the regulation pencil was a small strip of pipelead. There were sixteen dances, and between the eighth and ninth of them was begun the serving of refreshments at the reasonable price of 50 cents per couple. A table was spread in the hall, out of the way of the dancers, and the hungry could sitdown and partake -whenever their appetite prompted them. Following was the pen-printed MENU, Water. Ham. Bread. In the cases of Hedges and Merriam against the Supervisors of Yuba county and their bondsmen, commenced in the Superior Court of this county, Judge Walling yesterday granted defendants’ motions for a change of ° venue to Yuba county. The suits were brought by tax payers of the minthe Supervisors there from paying out of the treasury of that county large sums of money to the spies watching the hydraulic miners, and for other purposes of the kind, and to recover tothe county from the bondsmen of said Super‘visors the sum of $13,007.08 already appropriated in that manner. The granting of the motion for a change of venue will it is generally believed here result~in Judge Keyser without loss of time raising the injunction on the Supervisors and thus enabling the freespending of tensofthousands of: the money belonging to the Yuba county taxpayers in forcing with increased vigor and bitterness the fight against the miners of the State. The sneaking spies and greedy lawyers will not work without pay, but let them once be assured of receiving it,as they now are,and there is no extremity they will not resort to in carrying onthe crusade which has lagged for some time on account of the pendency of these suits. We may look for the early arrival in this county of an additional force of spies, and for an unrelenting warfare to be revived against our people (the miners) all along the line. The miners have nothing. favorable to expect where Keyser has control. When they enter Ais court, no matter how righteous their cause, how strong their claims, after long exverience it has become as natural forthem to leave all hope at the threshold as it is for them to doff their hats in his judicial presence. Judge Walling is an honest, conlaw without prejudices or bias, as he interprets it. But the knowledge of his ability or fairness does not lessen the force of this, the bowed under. In our next issue we will publish the complete text of the opinion granting the change of venue. To Quiet (Citle.
