Willoughby, Esa., : Editor, Nevada City Nugget, Nevada City, Calif. Dear Sir: During’ the past several months presistent rumors have come to-me to the effect that I am slated to succeed to the management of Nevada Irrigation District. Recently these reports have apparently become quite a common topic of conversation. While I appreciate very much the compliment to my ability that a few friends of mine evidently would bestow upon me, I feel that the situation calls for a frank statement before further developments occur. It should be remembered that for a very considerable period I actively and conscientiously opposed the plan of Nevada Irrigation District, and if for no other reason, it must obviously be ridiculous that I should accept the management of a project that I never had faith in. As the representative of the largest individual property owner in. the District, I am naturally very much eoncerned in its successful operation, but aside from this responsibility, I would have it quite definitely understood that I never have been, and not now, and never will be, a candidate for the office, and cannot conceive of any imaginable terms or conditions under which I could accept it. : Yours very ‘truly, W. G. Allen. Ancient Weapons and Armor on Exhibition Recent accessions of the Metropolitan Museum of Art range from a huge suit of armor to whimsically decorated and finely spun. Swedish glassware. few months have seen added to the collection swords, lances, pistols and mail, Among the swords is an example of a calendar blade, etched with . the names of the saints of each day of the year and the months, separated by their zodiacal signs. It is, said to have proved very useful to-an. officer of 1590, who, in moments of danger, wished to be able to select quickly the . proper saint upon whom he might call. There is. also an Italian knightly sword of 1450-1475, with shaped blade, blackened bilt and large disk-shaped pommel, ane side of whichshows Saint George and the other the . » letters “1. A. S.” pID YOU EVER STOP TO By { t . a tongue: . The firearms include a very long . barreled pistol of about 1000, a “Wheelock Dag” of the same date, an Eighteenth century pistol from Naples and a laike wall. gun of the Seven teenth century. What is thought to be the second largest. suit of armor in the world ts ulso on exhibition. So big was the doughty warrior for whom it was made that no one around the museum ~ could be found strong or big enough to wear it. Really Seemed Time for “Beau” to Depart Some racy stories of Beau Bruinmell, “Xing of the Dandies,” at the height. of his glory a century ago, are told by Lewis Melville in “George Bryan Brummell: His Life and Letters,” recalled a writer in the Kansas City Times. It was said of this beau that “women admired him, but men almest reverenced him.” He never married, but that he was not indifferent to the charm and companionship of the ladies, there is plenty of evidence, “T must leave here this morning,” he said unexpectedly to his host when staying at a country house, “But,” the other expostulated, “you were not going until the end of the week,” “Prue, quite true, curred, “but I really must be off.” His host, however, was Rot satisfied, and plied him with questions until at last Brummell, in desperation, blurted out: “Well, the fact is, I am in love with yeur wife.” ” “Why, my dear fellow, so was T . twenty years ago,” remarked the lady’s husband, hoping to put his guest at his ease. Then a thought struck him and he inquired: “Ts she in love with you?” “I—JI believe she is.” “That alters the ease,” the host said “T will send for your post horse immediately.” Butterfat Human Need Food scientists, whose efforts to find the greatest food values have increased year by year, find that generally the people are the healthiest in . the beau con. The consumer is hard boiled. He wants and quality. “Metropclitan centers ness away from suburban and rural sections by spending, money for addraw busivertising, not through talking trade? at home. They use the metropolitan newspapers for their show-windows in the rural sections. “The home town merchants carries the same nationally advertised goods as the metropolitan merchant does.
