Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Forstner had a family dinner Sunday
in honor of Joe’s birthday. Their
son, James and his wife from
‘Auburn and Mrs. Forstner’s sister, Mrs. Minnie Back of Oakland
and “her little” ‘granddaughter,
Kathleen, . /were present.
Mrs. Arina Holdam, Chattanooga, Tenn., is another sister of
Mrs. Forstner. She is now attending the Business and Professional Wornen’s convention in San
Francisco and will spend several
days ‘in the Forstner home before
returning east. ;
‘Joe Forstner was flown to Santa Maria Wednesday morning to
participate in fire fighting in the
Los Padres national. forest.
Wanda Stinson and Bill
Tobiassen Betrothed
Mr. and Mrs. Murl Stinson announced the engagement of their
daughter, Wanda, to William Tobiassen, son of Mr. and Ma. Carl
J. Tobiassen. ’
Miss Stinson came here with
her parents from Mojave where
she attended school. She was chosen by the Nevada City Soroptimist club to be the Goddess of
Liberty in Tuesday’s Fourth of
July Centennial celebration paracle.,
Tobiassen, now attending summer session of the College--of ‘the
Pacific, Stockton, and a teacher
in ithe Nevada City schools, was
born and raised in Nevada City.
Wedding plans are in progress

Ponemah Council Receives
Traveling Tomahawk
.Ponemah Council No. 6, Degree
of Pocahontas, received the traveling tomahawk at the last meeting. Lolami Council of Roseyille
brought the messenger of good
will with their degree team.
Ponemah council was proud to
be hostess to over one hundred
visiting members who trail to
the local tepee in honor of the
traveling tomahawk. Represented
were councils of Roseville, Auburn, Lincoln, Marysville, Oroville,
Grass Valley and far-away White
Eagle council of Chicago.
Euhalla council of Oroville has
asked Ponemah council to -bring
the-traveling tomahawk to their
tepee at a later date.
Mrs. Thelma Butz has been
recommended for Deputy Great
Pocahontas for Ponemah council
for the coming year.
After the meeting the group
gathered in the banquet hall and
enjoyed light refreshments. Belle
Brake and her committee had
decorated the hall in red, white
and. blue.
Madge Cook of Auburn was
given a surprise handkerchief
shower during the social hour, in
honor of her birthday.
The next meeting will be held
Friday, July 14 at the IOOF halk

Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Bane
were married Tuesday, June 20,
at the Lakeshore Baptist church
in Oakland. Rev. Harold Geistweit officiated at the ceremony.
. Mrs. Bane was the former Miss
Bonnie Jones of Nevada City, the
daughter of Mrs. Mabel Flindt of
Jordan street. ;
Mr. and Mrs. Bane graduated
from San Francisco State college .
and spent the last year teaching
in Butte county.The groom will
enter the Pacific College of Religion at Berkeley and will have
a. student pastorate at Pinole,
where the couple will make their
home.

Mrs. Grace Englebright recently entertained Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Craig of Colfax, who are
former residents of Nevada City.
Craig and his sister, Florence,
spent their childhood in the famous “castle.” Their father, Michael Craig, sold this historic residence to the present. owners.
Mrs. Craig, their mother, could
tell many interesting ‘stories of
early California history, as her
father, Judge Rumsey, was one
of the first federal judges in the
newly formed state when the
capital was in Monterey.

were greatly amused by the antics of Fred Evans of San Francisco, who was born in room 74
of the hotel. -79 years ago and
who came here to celebrate his
birthday. He was dressed in a
woman’s costume trimmed with
Belgium lace, a red shawl and
wig. As he had been in show
business, his imitation. of ‘a great
woman was most amusing.

IS CALLED BY DEATH
Funeral services were held
yesterday afternoon at Holmes
Funeral Home for Mrs. Clara
Louise Trevethick, 83, native of
Grass Valley and resident of Nevada City for 59 years, who died
Monday at the county hospital.
Rev. Max Christensen, rector
of Trinity Episcopal church, officiated. Burial was in the Odd
Fellows cemetery, Grass Valley.
Mrs. Trevethick was born Oct.
18, 1866, the oldest child of Mr.
and Mrs. John Williams. On July
1, 1888, she was married to Sampson S. Trevethick, who preceded
her in death Nov. 22, 1945.
She is survived by-.sons, Edward and William of Sacramento; George of Tahoe Valley, and
Carl of Nevada City; daughters,
Mrs. Ruth Johnson, Oakland;
Mrs. Helen Kiefer of Nevada
City, and Mrs. Adele Deal of
Forest; two brothers, George Hugunin of Arcata, and Ed Hugunin
of Lodi; a sister, Mrs. Nell Roney
of Bakersfield, and a cousin, Miss
Clara Carson of. Grass Valley.
Nine grandchildren and eleven
great-grandchildren survive.
~ Calaveras county is one of the
original 27 counties of California.

an application’ for authority to
increase certain rates and charges
applicable to “telephone service
furnished within the State of
California.
A copy of said application has
‘been furnished to the State and
to all counties and municipal cor:
porations whose citizens wouk
be affected by the proposed increase in rates. Any other county
or municipal corporation which
may be interested in the applicaition is hereby notified that a
copy thereof may be obtained
from the applicant upon request.
In general, the increases in
rates which are proposed to become effective within the COUNTY OF NEVADA and the CITY
OF NEVADA CITY are as _follows:
The proposed rate’ changes
do not affect rates for basic
exchange service. The increases involve local message
rates from public and semipublic telephones, extension
and private branch exchange
station rates and other rates
and charges for miscellaneous and supplemental equipment and service.
The Public Utilities Commission has issued the following notice regarding the hearing of said
