Boy Lost iu-a Mine,
A fifteen-year-old son of Wm. Meier
of Grass Valley works in the North
Stur mine. Thursdoy afternoon the
lad by some ineans got separated fron,
his fellow workmen and was missed
by them when they came off shift. a1
half past five o'clock. The alirm war
immediately given and all the miners
on the night shift began to search for
him. There are seventeen levels
the North “tar, and many niles ot
drifts, Cross-cuts, shoots, ete. After
an hour’s hunt the youngster ws
found alive and sound in the end of an
old drift. His candle had burned om
after he left his companions, and when
he tried to return to them he lost his
bearings, became confused and wandered around aimlessly in the dens
darkness, He had not been employed
long in the mine and knew but litth

The wife of Charles E. Johnson o
Graniteville died Thursday, night of
indammation of tie bowels, , She had

Johnson was a daughter of Henry
Fowler and was married at-Columbi.

The Debris Commission,
Robert T. Devlin has been to San
Francisco under inatractions from the
Sacramento Bourd of Supervisors to
confer with the Biggs Debria Commission, The President of the commission is in San Diego, and Mr.
Huber, who presides, heing g member
of the commission, also has charge of
the Signal Service ¢ flive, was not very
clear as to what the commission proposes todo, Mr. Devlin endeavored
to secure a& meeting of the commission
in Sacramento, but is doubtful if that
van be accomplished, The iftention
of the commission seems to be to receive communications from parties in
interest and, if deemed worth while,
to investigate the points raised. It ix
no likely that open, public meetings
will be held at all. Huber had no
idea as to either the scope of the commission’s work or the time likely to
be consumed in performing it.

State Legishature in 1331, ‘“‘whenever
a’ petition is presented to the Bourd of
Supervisors of any county, and signed
by five or more persons who are resident free-holders or pesséssors of an
orchard, of ‘both, stating that certain
or all orchards, or nurseries, or trees
of any variety, are infected with scale
ong, codlin moth or other insects that
are destructive to trees, and praying
that a commission bz appointed by
them, whose duty it shall be to supervise their destruction, as hereafter provided, the Board of Supervisors shall
within twenty diys select thre> commissioners for the county to be known
as the County Boar! of Horticultural
Commissioners.” ‘These Commnissiuners shall serve for a period of three
years from the time of appointmen',

A man arrested list Sunday for
stealing altar trimmings froma Charch
at Weat Berkeley bears a strong persohal resemblance to Charles Thorn
alias Dorsey who was sent to State Prison frow this county for life for murdering and robbing Wm. F. Cummings of
Moore’s Flat, but afterward escaped.
He is believed to be an ex-convict,
but he has not been identified. Datective Bainbridge of San Francisco and
Officer Thomas Downey of Oakland
have the reputation of knowing every
criminal unhung, but they don't recognize him, He is well branded, as he
is tattooed from head to foot with all
kinds of designs,and he claims to have
been a sailor on the Ocean Queen in
1868 and is very reticent about his
life.

Judge Walling has returned from a
two days’ hunt along the Seuth Yuba
near Montezuma Hill. He came back
empty-handed, and entered town by a

deer while on his tramp, but it waa
