(Andy) Holmes yesterday announced his candidacy for the office of coroner, an offiice ‘he filled for four years after an apprenticeship of eight years under Thomas M. Harris, as deputy coroner. For forty years Mr. Holmes has been a resident of Neyada county and-in that time has risen gradually to a place of eminence in ‘his vocation, throughout the state. Governor Merriam chose him a member of the Staite Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers to serve an uncompleted
term, due to a vacancy, and has reappointed him to a full term. The board itself elected him secretary and in pursuit of his many duties he has obtained unusual experience in the laws and regulations that govern the office of coroner and the business of funeral directing. There were eighteen applicants for the post open on the iBoard of Funer-. al Directors and Embalmers and of VERNON STOLL (Incumbent) Hereby announces his candidacy for re-election to the office of District Attorney. of Nevada County at the Primary Election August 30, 1938. JEFFERY ty (Ifcumbent)Hereby announces his candidacy for the office Of Constable” of Nevada Township at.the Primary miection. ot. August 30, 1938. . % ‘. those eighteen Governor Merriam chose the most outstanding man in this business in Northern California. For Andy Holmes was then president of the Coroners Association of California, which is a fair index of his rating &mong this important group of county officials. When he retired tthe association voted him an ‘honorary membership which he still holds. In taking his place on State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, Holmes brought honor to Nevada County, for there were only 5 members on this board chosen from all the counties in the state, and its administration is one of the most exacting, entailing a vast amount of detail in the enforcement of the laws and the careful supervision of the husiness of funeral directing in California. Not only ihis local experience, first as deputy coroner for eight years, and four years as coroner, give Andy Holmes a singular advantage in his eampaign for the office of coroner, but his experience as secretary to ‘the State Board. of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, gives him a grasp of the duties and law pertain‘ing to the coroner’s office, far beyond that of most candidates for this Post in California. In addition to these advantages Mr. Holmes maintains two mortuary establishments, one in Nevada City and another -in . Grass Valley; where, in all coroner’s cases, he may serve either community with equal facility. For instance it will not ‘be necessary to. remoye ‘the. remains of accident victims, from the eity in which the accident occurred. Mr. Holmes pledges that he will not, if elected, inter the indigent dead in the potter‘s field near the county hospital. While he was coroner, as owner of the Pine Grove cemetery, he found a resting place for these unfortunate deceased in an. approved cemitery. It has only been in the last three or four years that the indigent have ‘been interred in the potters field. Under Harris and Holmes this was never done, If elected to be coroner, Mr. Hol.mes intends, in so far as possible, to give Truckee, in all cases in the eastern end of the county, an independent administration, co-operating in or there for the convenience of all residents in that part of the county. iMrs. Agnes Taylor of Oakland is visiting her niece, Mrs. Glenn Cle land, and family in’ Nevada City. . SS CAMP PAHATSI TO OPEN JULY 3 Another group of older scouts left Tuesday for Camp Pahatsi where they will make preparations for thé -opening of Scout Camp July 3. Last weeks party ‘reported considerable damage to ground equipment and the telephone line. ; This weeks group will work on the dam, tank, reconnect the oil supply tanks for summer use, remove pumps for overhauling and sundry other jobs. Work parties are being organized in each community to go to camp Saturday and Sunday June 25 and 26 to accomplish as much as possible ‘before the advance party goes in on Tuesday June 28 to complete the camp setup. New tents and cots, which will replace old ones, will be transported to camp as soon as the road is open and free of snow. The camp committee will make the selection of the junior staff early next week. The Tahoe Area Council wil! again conduct a cub outdoor week at Camp Pahatsi during the week of July 1724 for boys of cub age, 9-10-11 years. Considerable interest in this years outdoor week is being shown. by the cubs following their receipt of cub camp bulletins from their cubmasters. Cub ‘‘beanies’’ will be issued to campers as they register. As in years past the daily program will start at 7:30 a. m. with “get up”’ call anr preparation for breakfast followed \by camp duties, bed making cub handicraft, nature instruction, swimming, siesta, games, camfire and bed at 9p. m. Opportunity is given these boys to partake of the joys of the outdoors, learning, playing and ‘‘doing’’ in company with boys of their own age, under the leadership of older scouts and adults interested in cubbing. DONNER TRAIL SIGNS ' The new-cedar, redwood and fir signs being made by the Tahoe National forest are practically ready for placing about the camps, roads and trails of the national forest. Two unusual signs are made for Hampshire Rocks and Big Bend public camps. These signs will read, “‘U. Donner Route.”” A long arrow points toward camp, these two being along the famous route followed by ‘the ill fated: Donner party.
