Twenty or twenty five automobiles of men, women and children, many of them wearing the yellow CIO buttons, waited patiently until the truck came in. Then the driver doled out to each of those entitled to relief a dozen oranges and a half dozen apples. The recipients complained bitterly that while this dole was filling it was not very sustaining. . It is understood that the recent enrollment of some 38 WPA workers of this vicinity in a CIO affiliate, called the Workers Allianee, has ibeen undertaken on the promise that A for a 5083 membership fee the CIO] will obtain’ for the WPA workers a Share in the distribution ‘of free clothing and bedding at uburn. Tiere has’ been much complaint rerecently that Nevada County is not getting its share of this free Federal clothing at the Auburn depot,, and the CIO now promises to remedy this condition. Miss Thelma McKnight, director of the high school home economics department, was trained at San Jose State Teacher’s College, and before coming to Nevada City, taught at Ceres in this state. Elzear Foley, engineer with fhe state division of highways, came up from Stockton during the past week end and is spending his vacation with his mother, Mrs. Emma Foley.
