SACRAMENTO, May 1.—Seeking

of the acts of federal agencies,

the legislature and urge adoption of,

vice-residency of the United States, than the democrats
Sweetland, little mining town of Nevada County, California,
entered upon a season of feverish activity.
ous and varied; mysterious packages were soon arriving by,
stage; the actual labor of preparation began Friday after the
school hours ard continued, save for a few hours of necessary
relaxation, until late the following afternoon. Darkness fel!
upon the town—the magic hour was at hand. :
Long before the time set for the opening ~ceremonies,
men, women and children began to file into the school yard.
They paused to utter, ‘‘ohs and ahs,” and no wonder. In its
somber setting of pine clad hills, the modest little hall of learning glowed like a gem of the first water. When at length, the
doors swung open, the crowd—and it was a crowd, surged in,
and filled the building, to capacity.
The interior of the building was ablaze ‘with light and
color; yards upon yards of red. white and blue bunting: draped the walls and festooned the ceiling; upon the speaker's
stand, which had been lavishly decorated with the colors. stood
a pitcher of sparkling mountain water. Many flags had been
appropriately placed, pictures of Cleveland and Hendricks
conspiciously displayed. In one obscure niche, stood a forlorn
picture of Blaine, which bore the inscription, ““Alas poor Yor_ick."” Lamp chimneys in the large chandelier which the children had named for the victors, had been polished until they
candidates, were soot incrusted and begrimed; of course the’
method of :general illumination which aroused the greatest interest and enthusiasm; it had been clevely devised; every winer inner frames, or brackets, each onee just large enough to
hold a lighted candle. The candles and their number must
have been legion, when lighted by jubilant young democrats
produced an effect never to be forgotten by those who were
privileged to observe it.
It was a night of wit and wisdom, soaring song and flowery speech, merriment and good natured cajolery; even the
republicans caught the spirit of the occasion and joined in the
general rejoicing. Time passed with flying feet, midnight came
“all too soon. The last strains of inspiring music died away into
silence, the last burst of eloquence ended with vociferous,
“Three cheers and a Tiger!’’ Lights were extinguished, the
weary revelers turned regretfully homeward. The Sweetland
Illumination ,had become a memory—just another colorful
incident in the annals of a region where history and romance
» walk ever hand in hand.
Uncle Silas says: ““You can’t blame the ‘dentderats for
whooping it up when they have a chance; they only win a
presidential election every twenty years or there-a-bouts.”’
