In 1938 Sonny presented his act

He booked several fairs that season but Sonny became ambitious for
a big act. He started acquiring stray

GOERNOR? OLSON
OR EARL WARREN
By CLEM WHITAKER:
“T will not be a candidate against
Mr. Warren for the Republican nomination, but will cordially support
him!”
With that unequivocal declaration
Justus (Craemer, Orange ' publisher ,
and president; of the powerful State
Railroad Commission, ended all speculation this week as to his political
intentions and virtually cleared the
field for Attorney General Earl War-’
ren to take the GOP nomination for
governor at the August primary with
out serious opposition.
Said Mr. Craemer:
“As a citizen, I'am first of all interested in the success of our war
effort. I believe that effort will be
advanced by placing strong, reliable
men in positions of responsibility. I
consider Mr. Warren such a man
and I believe it is in the public interest that we unite behind him.
Therefore, I will not be a candidate
against Mr. Warren for the Republican nomination, but will cordially
support him.
“Nor will I be a_ candidate. for)
Lieutenant Governor, as has’ heen
frequently suggested. I feel .that I
can be of more service to my state
in the coming campaign as an advoeate of principles than as a candidate. I will seek the restoration of
dignity, of efficiency, of economy
anl of honesty in state government,
because these things are everlastingly right and are in-eparable from a
successful prosecution of the war.”’
Mr. Craemer’s statement was interpreted in political circles as a
generous gesture which will greatly
strengthen Mr. Warren’s campaiga.
One-of the most popular publishers
in the state, with scores of newspapers urging his candidacy, and with a!
large personal following would have]
been a formidable candidate had he,
chosen to run, and his decision to
throw his support behinnd—Mr. Warren greatly enchances the
chances of conducting a successful,
non-partisan campaign. Practically it
will probably have the effect of narrowing the fight down to two principal contenders. Mr. Warren and
Governor Olson, with increasing
likelihood that Wallace Ware and
Roger Jessup will withdraw from the
gubernatorial battle. That would
leave Mr. Warren unopposed on thef
Republican side—and free to carry
the fight to Olson in the primary. '
The formal entry of James Rolph,
son of the late Governor Rolph, into
the campaign for Lieutenant Governor has also sharpened interest in
that contest,. but it is considered
likely that several other candidates
will announce before the final filing
date on June 20.
