‘MILLING AT PORCUPINE .
UNITED GOLD MINES
The description of milling at 4
small gold mine adpacent to the
Hollinger and McIntyre properties!
at Timmins, Ontario, by Ronald, A. '
recently issued: by the United States.
Commerce is of particular interest
as an instance where, with a small
initial outlay for plant and equip-;
ment, development of a mine _.
been carried on almost entirely on
proceeds from a 25-ton pilot mill.
About 75 per cent of the gold in,
the ore is free milling and farily
coarse. The crude ore is fed to a
crusher which breaks the ore to
about 65 per cent of it passes through
200mesh. The ball-mill discharge is
thinned with water and distributed
two 4 hy 8-ft. copper amalgamation
plates’ with 4 feet of blankets of
their lower ends. Forty per cent of
the total gold recovery is made on
the plates.
The discharge from the plates goes
to a’ duplex classifier which: is in
closed circuit with the plates and
the ball-mill. The rake product from
the classifier°is returned to the ball
mill, and the overflow runs ‘to an
impact amalgamator attached to a
concentrating table. The amalgamator catches fine gold which has
formation Circular 6433. “Amalgamation Practice at Porcupine

about 1-inch size. Next it is reduced . Ont.,”
to about one half inch rollh and isj tained free from the Uuited States
then ground in a ball-mill until,
escaped the plates, blankets and
traps. The table; concentrates average $40 per ton and after dewatering are cyanided by an affiliated
jee The table tailings go to
l the waste dump.
The concentrates caught on the
blankets and in the traps are ground
in. an amalgamation barrel. The
amalgam is restored in the plant
‘and sponge gold is melted and cast
into ingots at the refineryof of the‘
affiliated company. The average
grade bullion is gold 770 fine, and
silver 120 to 140 fine. The total
! operating cost per ton of ore treteed is $1.85.
